The 1870 census listing for Alfred Phillips includes an Orin Phillips, age 8. This, together with a marriage record for a Lewis Orin Phillips, and two for a Lewis O. Phillips that list his parents as Alfred Phillips and Almira (or Almina) Eldred, make it clear that his full name was Lewis Orin Phillips.1,6,7,10
In 1880 he was living in Independence Twp., Oakland Co., Michigan, working as a servant in the household of John Beardslee.11 At the time of his first marriage, in 1884, his residence was listed as in Atkinson, Holt Co., Nebraska.6 Although they were married in Oakland Co., Michigan, he and his first wife Minnie soon returned to his home in Nebraska, where their son Alfred was born in March 1885.12,13
In 1900 he was living with his daughter Mattie in Indian Fields Twp., Tuscola Co., Michigan.5 He and his third wife Phoebe were living at 833 S. Burdick St. in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, in 1910, along with his daughter Mattie from his first marriage, Phoebe's daughter Ina Boardman from her first marriage, and a boarder named Edward Dietrich.14
He was a farmer at the time of his first marriage in 1884, and later worked as a mason and plasterer.6,7,5,10,14
He and his first wife Minnie had three known children, Alfred (b March 1885), Frank L. (b 9 September 1886, d 1 October 1886) and Mattie (b abt 1892).12,13,15,16,5
