No primary evidence has been found for the marriage of Adam Artman and Mary Lomann, or for Mary's death. The earliest known record for the marriage is in the Hester genealogy, published in 1905, which simply says Adam Artman "m. Mary Lomann; second m. Lena Blessing." The 1830 census for Montgomery Twp., Richland Co., Ohio, lists Adam Artman with one male and one female in the household, both age 20-29, which implies that he was then married. Also listed in 1830, on the line above Adam Artman, is Richard Loman, with 2 males 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 male 60-69, 1 female 10-14, and 1 female 50-59.1,3

In most records, her given name is listed as Magdalena. "Sarah" only appears in the record of her marriage to Adam Artman (where she is "Sarah Blessing"), and in the Artman genealogy by Margaret Alzner.4,5
It should also be noted that the Artman genealogy says "Sarah Magdalena 'Lena' (Poff) Blessinger/Blessing was bom December 25th, 1808 in York County, Pennsylvania," which is the same as her birth date from her cemetery marker. It goes on to say that this is from the Baptismal Record Book of the Canadochly Church in Lower Windsor Twp., and that her parents were George and Catherine (Dellinger) Poff. However, the online transcripts of the "Canadochly Church Baptism Register" don't list this baptism. They do list several other children for Georg and Catharina Pfaf, including Magdalena Pfaf (born 2 January 1810, baptized 6 May 1810), and Sahra Pfaff (born 19 January 1823, baptized 30 March 1823). In addition, online marriage records show that John George Pfaff and Catharina Dellinger were married 11 November 1809 at Christ Lutheran Church in York, York Co., Pennsylvania, almost 11 months after Sarah Magdalena Poff's birth.5,12,13
No record has been found for the first marriage of Sarah Magdalena Poff, but the available evidence strongly suggests that her first husband was Christian Blessinger. First, in the record of her marriage to Adam Artman, and in the Hester genealogy, her surname is given as Blessing. Second, in her son James E. Artman's entry in the 1880 census, John Blessinger is listed with him and identified as "brother." Third, in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, John Blessinger is listed with the family of her son George W. Artman. Fourth, in 1881 G. W. Artman was appointed as guardian of "John Blessinger an Imbesile person," with a bond of $500, and J. E. Artman and J. Mason listed as sureties. And finally, in the final settlement filed by John Shrack on 24 July 1852 for his guardianship of John Blessinger and Mary Ann Blessinger, Christian Blessinger, deceased, is named as the father of John and Mary Ann Blessinger.4,14,10,15,9,16,17
She is presumably the female aged 30-39 listed in Adam Artman's household in Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, in the 1840 census, along with one male under 5 (son George), one male 5-9 (son John Blessinger from her first marriage), one male 30-39 (husband Adam), one female under 5 (daughter Almira), and two females 5-9 (daughters Margaret Artman, and Mary Ann Blessing from her first marriage).18 The family has not been found in the 1850 census, except for their presumed daughter Catharine, who was then living with the family of Andrew and Phebe Proudfit (Phebe was a sister of Adam Artman) in Montgomery Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio.19 Sarah and Adam are listed in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio, in the 1860 census, with (their children) Catharine, Amelia, Wm. H., Phoeba, and James E.7
In 1870, after her husband's death, she was listed in Orange Twp. with (her children) Amelia, Henry, Phoeba, and James E., plus (her widowed daughter) Margaret Gerkey and her children Charles and Phoeba J.8
Note that the birth dates we have for at least some of Adam and Magdalena's children are questionable. Most come from death records; no birth records have been found for any of their children. For example, their daughter Margaret's birth date of 10 September 1835 is about four months before the date we have for her parents' marriage. And the birth dates we have for Amelia Artman (March 1847) and William Henry Artman (6 August 1847) can't both be correct.

No record has been found naming her parents. The only evidence that she was the daughter of Adam and Magdalena Artman is her listing with them in the 1860 census, in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio. In the 1850 census she's listed with the family of Andrew and Phebe Proudfit in Montgomery Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio. Phebe Proudfit was a sister of Adam Artman, and thus would be Catharine's aunt.1,2

In 1880 she was living and working as a servant in the home of Daniel and Mary Walker in Montgomery Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio.6 In 1900 she was a servant in the home of Christopher Countryman in Perry Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio.3 In 1910 she was living in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio. Living with her as a boarder was Phebe Gerkey (her niece). Listed next to them in the census was Phebe's sister Fannie (Gerkey) LaValley and her family, including Amelia's sister Margaret (Artman) Gerkey.7
The Artman genealogy by Margaret Alzner mistakenly identifies Amelia as the wife of William Henry Artman. Amelia never married, and is listed as single in the 1880-1910 censuses, as well as on her death certificate. William married his only wife Anne (Weedman) in 1871, and she survived him, dying in 1930.8,6,3,7,5,9

And finally, in the final settlement filed by John Shrack on 24 July 1852 for his guardianship of John Blessinger and Mary Ann Blessinger, Christian Blessinger, deceased, is named as the father of John and Mary Ann Blessinger.6,7,3,8,2,9,10
He apparently was mentally ill, at least later in life. In the final settlement presented by his guardian Daniel Smith in March 1837, he was described as "Christian Blessinger an Insane Person."11
The guardian's account, filed in court in Richland Co., Ohio, in March 1837, included itemized lists of income totaling $117.53, mostly from the sale of various farm crops, and expenses totaling $106.36. The date 7 February 1835 is written next to the first sale item. The income included $2.00 from the sale of 1/2 ton of hay to Sol. Artman, and notes from "Artman" for $4.00 and from Geo. Poff for $29.30. Expenses included three cash disbursements to Solomon Artman totaling $10.09. The account was approved in November 1837.5 An updated account was filed by Smith on 22 April 1839, and included an additional $28 in cash received from Henry Blessinger of York, Pennsylvania, as well as additional expenses totaling $34.85. This account was approved on 14 November 1839.12

At some point, presumably after their father died, or perhaps after he became insane, Jonas Stough was appointed as guardian of John Blessinger and his sister Mary Ann Blessinger. He was later replaced by John Shrack. On 24 July 1852 Shrack filed in court the final settlement of his account, showing income of $80.50 from "Jonas Stough the former guardian," and itemized expenses totaling $144.31, including $40.00 for his services "from 15th August 1843 to 24 March 1847." The balance due to Shrack from his wards was $63.81. The account was approved by the court on 27 October 1852.1
John Blessinger lived in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio, with his brother George's family in 1860 and 18703,4, and with his brother James's family in 1880.5 His occupation was listed as farm laborer in the 1860 census, but no occupation was listed for him in 1870 or 1880.3,4,5
He apparently had developmental problems, and on 27 December 1878 James Alberson was appointed as guardian of "John Blessinger an Imbesile person," with a bond of $2600.7 On the same date Alberson stated that his (John Blessinger's) personal estate was worth "in way of rents" $1300.8
On 4 February 1879 Alberson filed a petition to sell his ward's real estate, saying it was necessary in order to provide for his maintenence and to pay debts. In the petition John Blessinger was described as "an idiot of the age of 50 years and residing with George Artman." The real estate totaled 56 acres and 4 rods, and was "worth annually $75," but the guardian had received no rents from it. Debts incurred during his guardianship included $839 owed to George Artman, and about $160 owed to others. An appraisal was filed 8 February, valuing the land at $1337.50, and it was sold to Michael Lutts on 19 February 1879 for that amount.6
His half-brother George W. Artman was appointed as his guardian on 16 December 1881.9

During the settlement of her first husband Philip Mogle's estate, she was initially awarded $1000 for a year's support, but it was later reduced to $650. When Philip Mogle's real estate was sold at auction to pay off his debts, she purchased it, for $840.8
In the 1860 census, enumerated after her first husband's death, she and her daughter Sarah were listed in the household of George and Sarah Ewing in McComb, Hancock Co., Ohio.9
She and her second husband John were living in Harrison Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, in 1870, along with their children Andrew and Jasper, John's son William from his first marriage, and Mary's daughter Sarah C. Mogle from her first marriage.3 By 1880 they had moved to Union Twp., Jasper Co., Missouri. William, Andrew, and Jasper were still with them. In the census Andrew is listed as being insane, and Mary was suffering from "dropsy of the chest" on the day they were enumerated.4

He died intestate, and Thomas F. Edgington was appointed administrator of his estate on 8 April 1861, and appraisers were appointed on 16 Apr 1861. The inventory filed 2 May 1861 valued various items from the personal estate at a total of $22.00. It also noted that he left a widow, "now Mary Ann Ward and one minor child," and awarded $1000 to her for a year's support. On 21 May 1861 the administrator filed a petition to sell the deceased's real estate of about 80 acres, claiming that the estate owed debts of $1033, and that the assets were insufficient to pay the debts.3
On 15 June 1861 Samuel Mogle (who had been appointed as guardian of Philip and Mary Ann's daughter Sarah) filed a statement in response to the petition to sell Philip Mogle's land, saying that the finding that debts owed by Philip Mogle totaled $1033 was not true, and that at the time of his death the actual debts did not exceed $10. A little over a week later, on 24 June, he filed a petition stating that Philip Mogle died owning 80 acres of land worth about $1100, and personal property worth about $200, and that all the personal property had been set off to the widow Mary Mogle. He charged that the administrator T. F. Edgington, "falsely and fraudulently intending to cheat and defraud ...," procured the appraisers to set off to the widow $1000, in addition to the personal property, for her year's support. He claimed that widow lived in the country, and that $100, in addition to the personal property, "would have been abundant" to support her and her child for a year. He also claimed that Edgington had procured the $1000 for the widow so that she could bid on the land in her own name "and thereby defraud and cheat Sarah Catharine Mogle out of her just rights." He also stated that Sarah would be receiving about $700 from the estate of her deceased grandfather Valentine Mogle, more than enough to pay Philip Mogle's debts. He requested that the widow's allowance be reduced from $1000 to $100, that the administrator be precluded from selling the land, and that the money coming to Sarah from Valentine Mogle be allowed to be applied to the debts against the estate of Philip Mogle.4
Samuel Mogle's petition was only partially successful. The widow's allowance for a year's support was reduced from $1000 to $650. But the land was sold at public auction on 24 August 1861, and was bought by the widow Mary Ann Ward for $840.3
The administrator's final account wasn't filed until 1 June 1864, and showed income of $872, with $840 from the sale of the real estate and $32 from the sale of the personal property. The expenses were exactly the same, $872, including the $650 awarded to the widow.3

His entries in the 1870 and 1880 censuses include a son, William A. Ward, born in Ohio about 1858, before his marriage to Mary Ann (Blessinger) Mogle, indicating that he had been previously married. His first wife may have been Leah Putman, who married a John Ward on 12 August 1852 in Hancock Co., Ohio. However, no birth record for William A. Ward, or death record for a Leah Ward, has yet been found to confirm that.3,4,5
He and his second wife Mary were living in Harrison Twp., Henry Co., Ohio, in 1870, along with their children Andrew and Jasper, John's son William from his first marriage, and Mary's daughter Sarah C.
