Clarissa Harlowe Barton was born on 25 December 1821 in North Oxford, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.2 She died at home on Easter Sunday, 12 April 1912, in Glen Echo, Montgomery Co., Maryland, at age 90.2
She was more commonly known as Clara Barton.2 She was educated at the Clinton Institute in Clinton, Oneida Co., New York, becoming a teacher.2 She founded a free school with about 600 students in Bordentown, Burlington Co., New Jersey.2 In 1854 she started work as a clerk at the U. S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C., and was the only permanent federal employee at that time.2
She resigned at the start of the Civil War to volunteer as an army nurse, and in 1864 was in charge of the hospitals for the Army of the James. In 1865 she visited Andersonville Prison in Georgia to mark the graves of the Union soldiers there. She gave lectures on her wartime experiences during 1866 and 1867, then went to Switzerland to recover her health.2 In Germany she served as a volunteer in the humane and hospital services during the Franco-Prussian War, and helped establish hospitals for the Grand Duchess of Baden. She was decorated for her services, receiving the Golden Cross of Baden, and the Iron Cross of Germany.2
When the American Red Cross was founded in 1881, she became its first president.2 She assisted during the floods along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers; the fires in Michigan; the flood in Johnstown, Pennsylvania; the earthquake in Charlestown, South Carolina; the yellow fever epidemic in Jacksonville, Florida; and tornadoes in Louisiana and Alabama.2 In 1883 the U. S. Senate foreign relations committee asked her to write the History of the American Red Cross, which was later published by the government printing office.2 She represented the United States at the Red Cross conference in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1884, and also was a delegate to the International Peace Conference there.2 In 1892 she assisted during the Russian famine.2 She personally directed relief assistance for the Armenian massacres in 1896.2 In 1898 she traveled with the Red Cross to Cuba during the Spanish-American War at the request of Pres. McKinley.2

Humphrey Case1

b. 31 August 1629
FatherJohn Case2
Relationship8th great-grandfather of Charles Edward Towne
ChartsHoward Town Ancestors
Humphrey Case was baptized on 31 August 1629 in Salem, Massachusetts.2
He settled in Saco, York Co., Maine, as "the grantee of Edward Colcord's forfeited grant (on the Biddleford side)."2,3 He served as "grand jury clerk of the writs" in 1672, as county tax commissioner in 1673, and also as town clerk.4 He also operated an inn.3 On 17 August 1674, as town clerk, he made the entry "Humphrey Case hath boate a mare and coult of James Were." As of 28 July 1674, only four men in Saco owned horses.2
In 1675 he and his family moved to Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, for safety from the Indians during King Philip's War. He and nine other residents of Saco were formally admitted to Salem on 11 November 1675. The war had started when the chief of the Wamponoage on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, known as King Philip, had determined to drive out the white men by organizing an uprising among all the tribes in New England. In Maine the leader of the Saco tribe, called Squanto, was a staunch opponent of the settlers. His hatred stemmed from an incident involving his wife and infant child, in which their canoe was intentionally upset by some English sailors. As a result, his child became sick and died.2,5
When he left Saco, he gave his land grant there, totaling 50 acres, to his daughter-in-law "Isabella Bawlden."2,3 He was granted land in Salem on 11 April 1681, and built a house and shop.2 He was still living in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, in 1714.2,3
The name of his wife, and mother of his children, is unclear. The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire says she was presumably a widow Baldwin, based on his granting of 50 acres to his "'dau. in law' Isabella Bawlden." And a 1994 About Towne article identifies her as "Margaret? (____) Baldwin." However, no other source has been found giving her name.3,2
