In 1608, when he apprenticed his son William to Abraham Robbertes, his occupation was given as gardener.2,5
In the Great Yarmouth parish registers, in addition to the entry for the baptism of William Towne, there are entries for the baptism of an Arthur Towne, son of John and Alice Towne, on 28 August 1597, and for the marriage of John Towne and Margaret Walden on 1 September 1600. Walter Goodwin Davis interprets this to imply that Arthur was a son of John and Elizabeth Towne (saying that the names Elizabeth and Alice were sometimes used interchangeably), that Elizabeth Towne died sometime after William's birth, and that Margaret Walden was this John Towne's second wife.1 Later research, however, suggests that William's parents were John Towne and Elizabeth Clarke, married 20 September 1597 (after the birth of Arthur Towne), and that Elizabeth Towne, widow, was buried in 1630. Charles Farrow, the Engish researcher working with the Towne Family Association, refers to the parish entries for Arthur Towne's baptism and Margaret Walden's marriage as "mystery entries."6,7,8,2

She came to New England with her parents in either the second half of 1638 or the first half of 1639.3
After their marriage she and her husband Thomas were given 150 acres of land in Topsfield, Massachusetts, by her father Zaccheus Gould, where they lived for 20 years.2,4 About 1660 they bought a 227-acre farm next to her father in Topsfield, where they probably remained the rest of their lives.2
In 1670 she and Thomas, along with Capt. John Gould (Phebe's brother) and his wife Sarah, and the elderly Joanna Towne, were guests at a dinner hosted by the Rev. Thomas Gilbert and his wife between two Sunday services. Rev. Gilbert was apparently sick and somewhat eccentric, which some of his parishioners blamed on drinking. As described by Davis:
A gold cup (surely a rare treasure in seventeenth-century New England) filled with wine was passed about the table and Mr. Gould alleged that Mr. Gilbert drank too freely therefrom. Joanna Towne (her age being given as seventy-five) testified in court that on Sunday Mr. Gilbert had administered the "sacrament swetly unto us" and that after the service "I was att dinner att Mter Gilbert's table ... and sat next to him on his right hand, and though some report that he drank too much of the sacrament wyn ... I believe he is wronged, for I that then sat next him saw no such matter ... And I can saifly take my oath that though our minister had the cup twyce in his hand, yet the first tyme he drank not one drop of it, but gave it out of his hand to Thomas Perkins, bidding him give it to me, for I needed it mor than he, being older. When the cup had gone about, it came into his hand the second time and I am sure ther could not be much in it then (it may be two or three spoon-ful) and that he drank."
Phebe Perkins testified similarly, saying that "there was a cup with wine in it which was offered to Mr. Gilbert. He refused to take it at first, but afterward put the cup to his mouth". After the dinner, Mr. Gilbert sang a psalm, in what appeared to Phebe Perkins to be a lower voice than usual. Sarah Gould, however, testified that after dinner her sister-in-law Phebe Perkins told her "I wonder my Husban would ask min to drinke for I think hee had noe need of it. The first time hee toke the Cope I saw him drinke a good draft." Mr. Gilbert's wife testified that he was sick, but the court ended up admonishing him anyway.
It didn't end there, however. Sarah Gould continued to gossip about the incident, and was eventually sued by Mr. Gilbert for slander. In court he asked that the judges "compare her [Sarah's] Oath with the Oath of Goodie Perkins, taken att the same tym, and if they do not clash one against the other I am much mistaken."1,4
Her husband's will, dated 11 December 1685 and proved 10 Sep 1686, directed that she was to live in his house with their sons Thomas and Timothy "if they can possibly agree, for I do think it will be best for them to carry on together." If Thomas and Timothy were to split apart, they, along with their brother Elisha, were each to pay her £2 yearly. She also received a bed, all the furniture that went with it, half the household goods, and various livestock.4

In his father's will John Cummings was left 100 acres of land now known as the Hobbs-Bell farm, plus 50 acres of land on the south side of the river.2 He bought other lands on the south side of the river, starting as early as 1694, eventually owning over 200 acres.3
He served as a tithingman and constable, and also held other minor offices.3
His will was dated 8 May 1722 and proved 16 July the same year. In it he left his father's 100-acre homestead to his sons Joseph and John, and they divided it equally on 26 October 1722. His son David was appointed administrator of his estate.4,3
