He was a Quaker.3 During the Revolutionary War, one of his brothers was killed at the battle of Brandywine on 11 September 1777. Another brother was a prisoner of the British, and escaped through a tunnel, but later died in a well.3 He and his wife Rachel crossed the Alleghenies in 1787 and settled in Crossroads, Washington Co., Pennsylvania.4 In 1814 he bought the western half of section 15 in Elk Run Twp., Columbiana Co., Ohio, and distributed it among his children Jesse, Thomas, William, Abraham, James, John, Annie, Martha, and Rachel. The area became known as "Crowtown" because most of the residents had that name.2 He was blind for several years before his death, and used crutches due to an ankle injury received while working with a sickle.4

He went by the nickname "Jim."1 Article F215 in The History of Western Allegan County, on John Dornan, says James Dornan (born 1854) was the son of John Dornan (his actual grandfather) and his second wife Nancy Wilson. This is an error, as shown by article F214 in the same book, the 1870 and 1880 census records for his father Lemuel Dornan, and his own obituary.8,9,2,4
He was a fruit farmer and horticulturalist, and owned a farm on Lake Michigan in Allegan Co., Michigan. He also worked as a carpenter, and helped construct several buildings in the area.1 He was a charter member of the I. O. O. F. No. 525 in Glenn, Allegan Co., Michigan, founded on his birthday in 1906.4
He and his wife Lucy were living in Allegan Co., Michigan, in 1920. Their sons Glenn and Lemuel, plus James Dornan's niece Doris Dornan (named Doris Hartsuicker in James Dornan's obituary, and Doris Heartsinker in Lucy (Griifin) Dornan's obituary), aged 17, were living with them. Glenn and Lemuel were both working as farm laborers at that time.10,4,5
He and his first wife Henrietta had two known children, Alonzo and Nellie.1 He and his second wife Lucy had the following known children: Glenn (b May 1887), Lemuel S. (b August 1888), Grace L. (b November 1889), Lee James (b January 1891).5,6,10,1

She probably was living with her husband Keys in Schroon, Essex Co., New York, before 1830.4 They moved to Ohio sometime between 1835 and 1838, based on the birth places and dates of their children Justin and Harriet.3 They moved again about 1840, to Whitley Co., Indiana, based on the birth places and dates of their children Charles and Clarissa.5,3 In 1840 they were among the first members of the Eel River Baptist Church in Cleveland Twp., Whitley Co., Indiana.6
On 26 April 1841 she and her husband Keys sold 40 acres of land (the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section 22 township 30 north range 8 east) in Whitley Co., Indiana, to Michael B. Kelley of Whitley Co. for $50. The witnesses to the deed were H. Swihart and Peter Creager.7
She and her husband Keys and their family are listed in Whitley Co. in the 1850 census. Keys' father Robert was living with them.3
