Based on the 1840 census, Ansel Record and his wife Mary were living in Middletown, Rutland Co., Vermont, in 1840. In the household were three males, one aged 40-49, one 5-9, and one under 5, and three females, one 60-69, one 30-39, and one 10-14. These entries are consistent with the known information on Ansel and Mary, and their first three children. The female aged 60-69 is probably Ansel's or Mary's mother.2
Although his surname is given as "Record" in his marriage record and the 1840 census, and for his widow (presumed) Mary in the 1850 census, his children generally used the surname "Reckard."1,2,5,6

He served during the Civil War in Co. C of the 34th Indiana Infantry, enlisting as a private on 21 September 1861, just two weeks before his marriage. He was later promoted to corporal, and was mustered out on 21 September 1864. His regiment saw action several places, including New Madrid, Aberdeen, Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Vicksburg, and Jackson.9
After the war he became a Baptist minister.1,10 He and his wife Lucinda lived in Whitley Co., Indiana, for a time1, then moved to Decatur, Adams Co., Indiana.1 They are listed in Root Twp., Adams Co., Indiana, in the 1870 census. They are enumerated as Balton (or Barton) and Lucy A. Rockwood, but their ages, birth places, and his occupation of Baptist Minister make it fairly certain that this is the right family. Living with them was Mary E. Hines, age 12, born in Indiana.10
They moved to Ohio sometime between 1870 and 188010,11, and were living in Pleasant Twp., Van Wert Co., Ohio, in 1880. Living with them was a servant, Bell Gilpin, age 18.11 In 1900 they were living in Marion Twp., Allen Co., Ohio.12
He and his first wife Lucinda had no children.12
His will was dated 25 February 1907, about four months before his marriage to Margaret Hill, and proved on 31 August 1907 in Adams Co., Indiana. He left all his property to Margaret, "provided, however, she does not harbor, board, lodge, or assist her brother John W. Hill in any way." If she were to violate these provisions, his property was to go to the church, except for a sum amounting to $2/week from 1 May 1906 until his death, "as compensation for services rendered." What prompted him to make this provision is unknown.13

She also went by the nickname "Clara."7 She and her husband Anderson were living in Cleveland Twp., Whitley Co., Indiana, in 1870.7 By 1880 they had moved to Columbia Twp., Whitley Co., Indiana.8 She and her second husband George lived in Cleveland Twp., Whitley Co., Indiana.3,9,1
She had no known children. Her entry in the 1900 census says she had no children, and none are listed in her earlier census listings. In the 1910 census she is listed as having had four children, with two still living. This is probably wrong, possibly applying to her second husband George Croy instead of her.3,9
