After their marriage he and his wife Mary moved to Sutton, Suffolk Co. (now Worcester Co.), Massachusetts.2
His will was dated 5 May 1756, and proved on 24 October 1757. He left all of his household goods to his wife Joanna, and provided for her support for as long as she remained a widow. His daughters Mary Fitts, Susannah Day, and Bethia Fitts, from his first marriage, were each left 6s, having already received a share of his estate. All of his land, buildings, livestock, and farming tools, plus £14, were left to his son Benjamin, from his second marriage. The remaining children from his second marriage, Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Lot, Jonathan, and Sarah, were each to receive some amount of money when they reached lawful age or were married.1
He and his second wife Joanna had eight children born in Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.1

In 1744 John Cummings and his wife Mary moved from Middleton, Essex Co., Massachusetts, to Andover, Essex Co., Massachusetts.4 He fought in the French and Indian War in 1755.3
The Towne genealogy by Hoover apparently combines the twin daughters Mary and Mercy Cummings. It lists just one, Mercy, and says she married Bartholomew Towne. And the published Andover vital records do indeed list only Marcy Cumings, as "Marcy, d. twin, John and Mary, Dec. 28, 1745," with no entry for Mary. However, handwritten records from the Ancestry database Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 make it clear that there were twin daughters, Mary and Mercy. Further, the Andover vital records list Mary as the one who married Bartholomew Towne.3,5,6,7

He and his wife Judith and their family sailed from Bristol, England, on 1 December 1630 on the ship Lyon, William Pierce, master. They arrived at Nantasket, Massachusetts, on 5 February 1630/31, after surviving a stormy journey that resulted in the loss of one seaman. (The "About Towne" article has the dates one year later, and says the ship was the Lion.) They entered Boston Harbor the next day, anchoring "among many ice cakes." The supplies brought by the ship helped save the colony from famine. Also traveling on the Lyon was Roger Williams, who founded Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in 1636.1,4
He soon joined the church in Boston, and was made a freeman on 18 May 1631.1 In 1632 he was part of a committee to determine the boundary between Roxbury and Dorchester.1
In 1633 he and his wife Judith joined the group led by John Winthrop, the younger, and moved north along the coast, where they founded the new town at Agawam, which later became Ipswich, Massachusetts.1 In 1634 he was granted 40 acres of land in Ipswich. The next year he received an additional 3 acres of upland and 10 acres of meadow toward the head of Chebacco creek, plus an island called More's point containing about 50 acres on the south side of the town's river. That same year he owned 10 acres where he had built a house, plus an adjacent 6 acres of upland and 6 acres of meadow. In 1636 he was granted 40 acres at Chebacco (which he sold to Thomas Howlett the next year), and in 1639 he received 6 acres of "planting ground" south of the river.1 He served as the representative from Ipswich to the General Court of Massachusetts Bay in 1636, and as a grand juryman in 1641, 1648, and 1652. He also held various town offices.1 In March 1649/50 he was released from training obligations, being over 60 years old.1
His will was dated 28 March 1654 in Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts, and proved on 27 September 1654. His wife Judith was named executrix, and William Bartholomew and Thomas Harris were witnesses. In his will, he divided his cattle, horses, and sheep between his son John and John's sons John and Abraham, his son Thomas and Thomas' son John, his daughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Lydia Bennett and their children, and his grandson Thomas Bradbury. His house, outbuildings, and land were to go to his son Jacob after the death of his wife. Whatever remained was to go to his wife Judith. The estate was inventoried at £250 5s, most of which was real estate.1,4
