In various records there is mention both a Horace Clark and a Judson Clark as sons of Almon Clark and Sarah Woodin. In the 1870 census, Horace Clark (age 4) is listed in the household of Almon and Sarah (Woodin) Clark. A newspaper article about Sarah written about 1929 mentions Judson as one of her children, then living in Petoskey, Emmet Co., Michigan, but doesn't mention Horace. The article, and the 1900 and 1910 censuses, say that Sarah had eight children, not nine. Census listings have been found for Judson Clark in Emmet Co., Michigan, in 1900 and 1920, but not 1910 or 1930. Similarly, census entries have been found in Emmet Co. for Horace J. Clark in 1910 and 1930, but not 1900 or 1920. The information in all four of these census listings is (mostly) consistent: (1) his age from 1900 to 1930 is given as 32, 46, 53, and 64; (2) in all four he is listed as single, and born in Michigan; (3) his parents are both listed as being born in Ohio (except in 1900, when both parent's birth places are listed as unknown, and 1910, when his mother's is listed as unknown). It thus seems likely that Horace and Judson are the same person, probably with the full name Horace Judson Clark.1,2,5,6
He is listed in the 1900 census in Pleasant View Twp., Emmet Co., Michigan, as a boarder in the household of Arnoud M. Dietz.7 He is listed in 1910 in Littlefield Twp., living alone8, and in 1920 in Carp Lake, again living alone, but near cousins Bert Earl and Maud (Earl) Scafe.9 In 1930 he is listed in Petoskey, as an inmate at the Emmet County Infirmary (i.e., poorhouse).10

Clark and Sarah Wooden, so this is clearly the son of Almon W. Clark and Sarah Woodin. But it lists his age as 77, giving a birth year of about 1857. The age of 77 may be a transcription error; an age of 67 would be about right. It's possible that "J. Hudson" is a transcription error for "H. Judson."

Served during the Civil War in Company G of the 28th. Michigan Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on 2 September 1864 as a Private, and was later promoted to Corporal. They left Kalamazoo, Michigan, on 26 October, and traveled to Camp Nelson, Kentucky. From there they led a wagon train to Nashville, Tennessee, arriving on 5 December, and participated in the Battle of Nashville from 12 to 16 December.
In January 1865 they joined the 23rd. Corps, traveling from Louisville, Kentucky, to Alexandria, Virginia, and eventually to Wilmington, North Carolina, where they marched north with Gen. Sherman. They fought at Wise's Forks, North Carolina, from 8-10 March 1865, then marched inland, arriving at Goldsboro, North Carolina on 21 March, where they performed railroad guard duty.
After the surrender of the Confederacy, they remained on duty in North Carolina, at Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington, and Newberg. The regiment was mustered out in Raleigh on 5 June 1866 and immediately returned to Detroit, Michigan, where they were disbanded on 8 June.6,7,8
He and his wife Lucy were living in South Haven Twp., Van Buren Co., Michigan, in 18809, and in Bliss Twp., Emmet Co., Michigan, in 1900.3 He worked in a sawmill, as a saw fitter (or filer).9,3,1

This transcribed marriage record gives their marriage date as 11 December 1873. If this is the record for George H. (Henry?) Earl and Lucy Jane Woodin, parents of Charles, Maude, and Mabel Earl, other evidence indicates that the 1873 date may be wrong. First, George and Lucy's daughter Maude Scafe, in a letter to Verda Swikert, gives the date as 18 December 1870. Second, George and Lucy's son Charles was born 24 (or 27) February 1873, with George H. and Lucy Earl listed as his parents, indicating that they were then married. Third, the marriage record lists Laura Wooden, presumably Lucy's sister, as a witness, but Laura was married on 8 March 1873, and would have listed her name as Laura Ketchum. Fourth, from the birth dates given by Maude Scafe for her parents, George and Lucy would have been 25 and 26, respectively, on 11 December 1873, while the marriage record lists them as 24 and 25. Thus, it seems possible that the date was mis-transcribed by the clerk preparing the record, or this is a different couple.
