MotherJane Hamilton4,1,5 b. 7 Sep 1845, d. 2 Dec 1930
RelationshipGreat-grandaunt of Charles Edward Towne
Lelia Enid Williamson was born on 6 March 1882 in Ganges, Allegan Co., Michigan.6,5 She was married by Thomas Laity to Ami Miller, son of Adam Miller and Eliza A. Hale, on 24 April 1902 in Glenn, Allegan Co., Michigan.5 She died at age 88 on 5 February 1971 at the Birchwood Manor Nursing Home in Holland, Ottawa Co., Michigan, where she had been staying for six years.6 She was buried on 8 February 1971 at Fennville Cemetery in Allegan Co., Michigan.6
In 1910 she and her husband Ami were living in Marshall Twp., Spokane Co., Washington. Living with them were two boarders, William Sydow and John Rutherford.7 When Ami registered for the World War I draft in September 1918, they were living in East Seattle, King Co., Washington.8 They returned to Ganges Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, sometime between 17 February 1919, when their son Hamilton was born in Washington, and 5 January 1920, when they were enumerated in Michigan in the 1920 census.3,9 They were still in Ganges Twp. in 1930.10
It should be noted that the obituary for Lelia's father Beniah Williamson, published on 2 February 1928, says that one of his surviving children was "Mrs. Lelah Miller, Seattle, Washington." If true, this implies that she and Ami moved back to Washington between 1920 and 1928, then back to Michigan (again) before 1930. It seems more likely that this information in the obituary is wrong.4
In the settlement of her brother Calvin's estate, probably on 29 December 1970, she received a 1/4 share, which was worth approximately $3,599, not subject to Michigan inheritance tax.2

Mary Woodin (1840-1935)
Mary Woodin was born on 19 April 1840 in Newfield, Tompkins Co., New York.2,3 She married David Gile, son of John Gile and Laine Schramon, in 1863 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.2 She died on 6 January 1935 at the home of her son Perry in Cheshire Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, at age 94.3,4 She was buried on 9 January 1935 at Rowe Cemetery in Cheshire Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. Funeral services were held at her son Horace's home. She was survived by her sons Perry and Horace, nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.4,3
Her family moved to Trumbull Co., Ohio, about 1843, when she was "only a baby."2 While young, she worked for a neighbor there in the dairy and cheese-making business.2
In 1862 she moved with her parents to Allegan Co., Michigan. Except for the first couple of days, she and her sister Sarah walked most of the way. They got lost while traveling through Cleveland, and their father "had quite a time to find us." Later, while passing through Kalamazoo, they were made to ride in the wagon, because their father thought it was "a waste of time to delay the journey, looking for his daughters."1,2,5
For a few years after their marriage, she and her husband David lived in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.2 They moved to Cheshire Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, about 1870, where they eventually acquired 260 acres of land2, and where they lived the rest of their married life. Three farm hands and a housekeeper were living with them in 1900, and their son Horace and his family were living with them in 1910 and 1920.2,6,7,8,9,10
After her husband's death in 1920, she lived with the families of her sons Perry and Horace, spending winters with one and summers with the other.2

She moved from Ohio to Allegan Co., Michigan, with her parents in 1862. Except for the first couple of days, she and her sister Mary walked most of the way. Later, while passing through Kalamazoo, they were made to ride in the wagon, because their father thought it was "a waste of time to delay the journey, looking for his daughters."1,7,2
At age 17, she taught school in what is now Belknap for $2.50 per week. She had 13 students, and rotated boarding with their parents. She taught again at age 19, at "Turkey Island," now known as Bravo in Allegan Co., for $3.00 per week.2

This transcribed marriage record gives their marriage date as 11 December 1873. If this is the record for George H. (Henry?) Earl and Lucy Jane Woodin, parents of Charles, Maude, and Mabel Earl, other evidence indicates that the 1873 date may be wrong. First, George and Lucy's daughter Maude Scafe, in a letter to Verda Swikert, gives the date as 18 December 1870. Second, George and Lucy's son Charles was born 24 (or 27) February 1873, with George H. and Lucy Earl listed as his parents, indicating that they were then married. Third, the marriage record lists Laura Wooden, presumably Lucy's sister, as a witness, but Laura was married on 8 March 1873, and would have listed her name as Laura Ketchum. Fourth, from the birth dates given by Maude Scafe for her parents, George and Lucy would have been 25 and 26, respectively, on 11 December 1873, while the marriage record lists them as 24 and 25. Thus, it seems possible that the date was mis-transcribed by the clerk preparing the record, or this is a different couple.
