He served for three years during the Civil War.4
He and his wife Susan moved to Noblesville, Hamilton Co., Indiana, in 18674, where they remained their entire married life.5,6,3,7,8 He worked as a carpenter for most of his life, but ran his own cigar store in 1910.5,6,3,7
He was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias lodge in Noblesville.4
He and Susanna had three children, including Cora (b abt 1869). According to the 1900 census, all three had died by 1900, but the 1910 census indicates that all three were then still living. Since no other children appear with them in any of the censuses, and Cora only appears in the 1870 census at age 1, the 1900 census is probably correct.5,6,3,7

He and his wife Mary were living in Salamonie Twp., Huntington Co., Indiana, in 1880.6 By 1900 they had moved to Jackson Twp. in Wells Co., Indiana7, where they lived until at least 1910.8 He worked as a laborer, on farms and doing odd jobs.6,7,8
He and Mary had eleven children, but names are known for just six: Effa J. (b abt 1876), Ruth A. (b September 1879), Alva (b July 1882), Julia (b June 1897), Sarah Landona (b December 1890?), and Elbridge W. (b March 1892). Six of their children had died by 1900. The remaining five were still living in 1910, and include Alva, Julia, Sarah, and Elbridge. Sarah and Elbridge were also still living in 1920.
The name and birth date of their daughter Sarah Landona requires some explanation. The 1900 census lists a daughter Landona, with a birth date of December 1894 but an age of 10. In the 1920 census Mary J. Williamson and Elbridge W. Williamson are living with Seth and Sarah L. Broom, with Mary listed as Seth's mother-in-law and Elbridge as his brother-in-law. Sarah L. Broom is listed as age 30. In the 1910 census Seth and Sarah L. Broom are listed as neighbors to Levi and Mary Williamson, and Sarah's age is listed as 20. Based on the cosistency in the ages of Landona Williamson (10 in 1900), and Sarah L. Broom (20 in 1910 and 30 in 1920), and the fact that the 1920 census indicates that Sarah was Mary's daughter, it's assumed that she was actually Sarah Landona, and the birth year of 1894 listed for her in the 1900 census is an error.6,7,8,9

He and his wife Arlis were living with his father William in Jackson Twp., Wells Co., Indiana, in 1880.7
In the 1880 census, Milton Williamson and his wife Arlis are listed with one child, William F. (born before 17 June 1880; his age is listed in the 1880 census as "24/30"). In the 1900 census, Arlis (listed as "Alie") and her second husband James Boxell are listed with six children, including Milton Williamson, born February 1887, and listed as James Boxell's stepson. The other five have the surname Boxell and are listed as James Boxell's sons and daughters. Two of these five were born before James and Alie were married, and thus must be James's children from a prior marriage, and three were born after they were married, and thus must be children of James and Arlis. In addition, Arlis is listed as having had a total of nine children. Since at least three of Arlis's nine children are known to be with her second husband James Boxell, she and her first husband Milton Williamson had at least two children (William and Milton), and possibly as many as six.7,8

He served during the Civil War in Company F of the 1st. Michigan Engineers Regiment, enlisting on 24 December 1863. In the early part of 1864 the regiment was in Tennessee, helping build the Nashville and Northwestern railroad from Nashville to the Tennessee River, block houses along the railroad, and store houses at Bridgeport and Chattanooga.
In June 1864 part of the regiment, including Company F, was attached to Gen. Sherman's forces, and charged with rebuilding bridges and railroads to assist in the advance upon Atlanta, which they reached on 28 September. There they built defenses, and destroyed property that might be useful to the enemy.
On 16 November they left Atlanta, joining the 14th. Corps in its march to Savannah, Georgia. Along the way they built roads and bridges and layed pontoons for the advancing army. They arrived in Savannah on 11 December, where they again helped build defenses, and destroyed railroad lines leading out of the city.
The regiment was then sent to Beaufort, South Carolina, and joined the march from there to Goldsboro, North Carolina. Along the way they destroyed "a vast amount of public property," including railroads, and repaired and built numerous bridges to assist in the army's advance.
At the end of the war the regiment took part in the Grand Review on 24 May 1865 in Washington, D.C., then was sent to Nashville, Tennessee, where they were mustered out on 22 September.
The circumstances of David Giles's departure from the regiment are a bit unclear. One on-line database says he deserted on 30 June 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky, another says he was mustered out on that date, and the 1890 Veterans Schedule says he was discharged on that date.4,5,6,7
For a few years after their marriage, he and his wife Mary lived in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.2 They moved to Cheshire Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, about 1870, where they eventually acquired 260 acres of land2, and where they lived the rest of their married life. Three farm hands and a housekeeper were living with them in 1900, and their son Horace and his family were living with them in 1910 and 1920.2,3,8,9,10,11

He served during the Civil War, first in Company I of the 19th. Ohio Infantry and later in Company E of the 29th Ohio Infantry. He enlisted in Company I on 27 April 1861 for three months service, and the regiment was mustered in on 29 May. They served guard duty for a ferry at Bellaire, Ohio, then joined Gen. McClellan's Provisional Army of West Virginia. They were sent home on 23 July, and arrived in Columbus, Ohio, on 27 July. Company I was mustered out on 30 August.
He then enlisted in Company E on 16 September 1861. This regiment was sent to Cumberland, Maryland, on 17 January 1862 where it became part of the Army of the Potomac. They saw action at Winchester, Port Republic, Cedar Mountain, and Chancellorsville in Virginia, and at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. They then joined the Atlanta campaign in 1864, participating in the battles of Dug Gap, New Hope Church, Dallas, Pine Knob, and Peach Tree Creek in Georgia. They were part of Sherman's march to the sea, and participated in the Grand Review in Washington, D.C. His unit was mustered out on 21 June 1865.3,6,7
For a time after their marriage he and his wife Alvira lived in Ohio, where their first child was born in 1860.5,8 They moved to Michigan by about 1863, when their second child was born, and were living next to Alvira's father Federal in Ganges Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, in 1870.5 They moved again, to Bangor Twp., Van Buren Co., Michigan, where they are listed in the 1880 and 1900 censuses.9,4 They were living in Lee Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, in 1910 and 1920. Their son Myron was living with them in 1910. In 1920 their son David was listed next to them in the census as "son," but as a separate family in a separate dwelling.10,11
In the censuses, his occupation was listed as farmer in 1870, farm laborer in 1880, day laborer in 1900, and farmer again in 1910.5,9,4,10
