He served three years during the Revolutionary War under Capt. Shattuck and Col. Greaton.2
The Foster genealogy by Pierce lists Jonathan Foster's fourth wife as Mercy Towne, born 1751. Affidavits in his Revolutionary War pension file indicate a birth year for Mercy of 1753 or 1754. The Towne genealogy by Edwin Eugene Towne lists Mary's birth date as 1755. And in the recently-published Towne genealogy by Hoover, she notes that the names Mary and Mercy were often used interchangeably. Mary's older sister Mercy was born 15 February 1744/45. Hoover thus speculates that the older sister Mercy may have died young, that Mary then became known as Mercy, and that she was Jonathan Foster's fourth wife.2,1,3
He and his fourth wife Mary had two known children, Joseph (b 28 May 1780) and Stephen (b 27 April 1782).1
