  2. [S831] Peter Wilson Coldham, "Genealogical Gleanings in England - William Bowditch of Salem, Mass., 1671-1681," National Genealogical Society Quarterly, December 1981. His birth date is based on a statement by his mother Sarah's father-in-law William Bowditch, in his response to charges that she and others brought against him in a Chancery suit in 1699, in which he said that she "for diverse yeares after the goeing off of her said husband to New England had a sonne of her body called Giles." Sarah's husband William Bowditch had emigrated to New England in 1671, but she stayed behind in England with their son William, and didn't join him in New England until 1679, meaning Giles must have been born between 1671 and 1679.

Margaret Cordelia Silver was born on 22 March 1852 (based on her age at death of 69 years, 9 months, 6 days) in Yancey Co., North Carolina.4 She married first Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch, son of Joseph Henry Bowditch and Elizabeth Blanchard Abbot, on 2 November 1870 in Yancey Co., North Carolina.2 She married second Andrew D. Hall, son of Billy Hall and Sally Smith, about 1887.5,6,7 She died on 28 December 1921 in Crabtree Twp., Yancey Co., North Carolina, at age 69 from pneumonia and flu.4 She was buried on 29 December 1921 at Micaville Cemetery in Yancey Co., North Carolina.4
She went by her middle name Cordelia, and the nickname Delia.8,9 She probably moved with her husband Nathaniel to Illinois in 1871. An 1875 newspaper article about his second marriage, in Kankakee Co., Illinois, provides evidence supporting this. It reports that "it is said" that he had been married a few years ago to a southern woman, that they lived "in this country" for some time, and that they went back to South Carolina [sic] after a baby was born.10 Further, Nathaniel and Cordelia's son John was born in September 1871. His birth place is listed as North Carolina in the 1920 and 1930 censuses, but as Illinois in the 1940 census and on his death certificate. (He has not been found in the 1880, 1900, or 1910 census.)11,12,13,14 She and Nathaniel must have indeed come back to Micaville for a time, since their daughter Mary was born there about 1873 or 1874.15
She and her second husband Andrew are listed in Crabtree Twp., Yancey Co., North Carolina, in the censuses from 1900 to 1920.9,16,17 In the 1900 and 1910 censuses she is listed as being unable to read or write, but in the 1920 census she is listed as being able to read but not write.9,16,17 And in the 1900 census she is listed as having had seven children, with three still living, while our records indicate that she had four children living at that time.9

Children of Margaret Cordelia Silver and Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch

In the 1880 census Delia Bowditch is listed as divorced/widowed in the household of Greenberry Silver in Crabtree Twp., Yancey Co., North Carolina, with a daughter Mary, age 7, and a son Augustus, age 5, but no son named John.8

This article says Cordelia married second Andrew Hall, but erroneously says he was the widowed husband of Cordelia's sister Catharine. Andrew's first wife was Elly Wilson, not Catharine. Catharine "Eliza" Silver married James M. McCoury in 1876 and died in 1931.

Hall and died in 1885, and that her sister Lavada Eliza Silver married James McCoury and died in 1931. Catharine "Eliza" Silver was the one who married James M. McCoury, in 1876, and died in 1931. Lovada "Ella" Silver married A. B. McCoury in 1880 and died in 1947.

  15. [S3346] We don't have a birth record for her, and other records are inconsistent on the date. The only records we have with an exact birth date are her death certificate and cemetery marker, which say she was born 9 October 1875. However, her death certificate also says she died 5 February 1963 (her cemetery marker says 6 February 1963) at age 88, which gives a birth year of 1874 (assuming "9 October" is correct). Social Security records say September 1875, and the 1900 census says December 1873. Assuming she was born late in the year, as these three records suggest, the 1880 census implies a birth year of 1872; the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1940 censuses imply 1873; the 1930 census implies 1876, and her age of 19 at marriage implies 1875.
