The full names of her birth parents are unknown, but she was legally adopted at age 6 by James Artman and his wife Mary on 28 September 1900 in Crawford Co., Ohio. She had previously been a resident of the Cleveland Protestant Orphan Asylum in Cleveland, Ohio.1 At the time of her adoption her name was legally changed to Hazel Evan Artman.1
On 19 October 1916 she and Clifford Goodwin, age 24, were arrested in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, for forgery. They allegedly had passed fraudulent checks totaling "hundreds of dollars" using the signature of [her adoptive brother] Elza Artman. Goodwin placed most of the blame on her, saying that they met while he was driving a cab in Terre Haute, and that she had offered to buy him a car and clothes.
She stated that she had met and married Charles Krider while she was in high school in Brazil, Indiana, and that they had moved to Terre Haute about six months earlier. She said Krider left her and her baby on 3 October, traveling to Indianapolis with another woman, and that she had been despondent since then. She left her baby with a Mrs. Graham in Terre Haute, and with Goodwin traveled to Sellersburg (Goodwin's home), Jeffersonville (his mother's home), back to Sellersburg, then finally to Indianapolis where they stayed together at the Colonial Hotel. Goodwin cashed bad checks for $60 in Sellersburg and $15 in Jeffersonville. Together they used a bad $100 check to buy jewelry at the Franklin Jewelry Co. in Indianapolis, and also bought an overcoat and other articles. They bought a car using a $375 check (or $600, accounts differ) for partial payment, but the car was not released to them pending the clearing of the check.7,8
In a letter to the editor of The Brazil Daily Times dated 20 October 1916, her husband Charles Krider said he had traveled alone to Indianapolis to look for work, not with a woman. He said she sent him a card 4 October saying she and the baby were well, that they might come to him soon, and telling him not to believe what others were saying. On 6 October he received a telegram saying that the baby was being neglected, and was then in the hands of guardians. He said that the baby was now in his possession at his parents' home, and that he was seeking a divorce.9
On 21 October 1916 a short article in The Brazil Daily Times noted that although reports of the case in Indianapolis and Terre Haute newspapers were saying that she was claiming to be a sister of local druggist Elza E. Artman, those claims were untrue. She was "befriended by the Artman family ... but she is not a sister of Mr. Artman."10
On 26 October 1916 in Indianapolis, she and Goodwin waived preliminary examination and were bound over to the grand jury, with a bond of $1000 each.11 One news article says they were tried in Indianapolis on 28 October 191612, while another says they were indicted there on 7 December 1916.13 In any case, they were both found guilty and sentenced to 2-14 years in prison. Goodwin was also fined $100.14
She was released on parole sometime before January 1920, when she was listed in the census working as a servant in the household of William Swain, an Indiana state senator, in Pendleton, Madison Co., Indiana.15 While working there she met her second husband Everett Owen, who delivered groceries to the house.16 Not long after their marriage, she and Everett were arrested in Reading, Hamilton Co., Ohio, for stealing clothing and other items from Mrs. Swain, and on 6 February 1921 she was sent back to the Indiana Woman's Prison in Indianapolis for violating parole.16
She and her first husband Charles had two known children. The first was a daughter born 28 September 1914 in Clay Co., Indiana, and was listed only with the surname Krider in her birth record, and thus probably died young. The second was Edward F. Krider, born 29 April 1916 in Vigo Co., Indiana.17,18

In the 1870 census she is listed at age 9 with her parents in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio, as "Allce," possibly a misspelling and/or a nickname.1
No further record has been found for her, but she was apparently living in 1910, and died before 19 February 1936. Her mother Mary's entry in the 1910 census indicates she had had seven children, with five still living. Since James M. Artman and Effie Artman had died by 1910, "Allce" must be one of the five still living. And the obituary of her brother Franklin Artman, who died 19 February 1936, mentions his sisters Ida (Mrs. John Delker) and Jane (Mrs. Jane Camp) as survivors, but not her.2,3

After their marriage, he and his wife Amanda lived for a time in Galion, Crawford Co., Ohio, wher they are listed in the 1900 census.5 They were living in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, in 1920, and in East Cleveland in 1930.
