In September 1899, when her husband Albert was serving in the Navy as a surgeon on the cruiser USS Montgomery, and she and their young children Lynde and Edith were living in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, she decided to join her husband in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the Montgomery was expected to be stationed for several months. She and her children sailed from New York on the steamship Nile, arriving at the harbor in Rio two weeks later. The Montgomery was also there, and a boat was sent over from the Nile, returning with several crewmen. Passengers on the Nile who had learned of her trip were scanning the group looking for her husband, who was finally spotted. She had planned to stay in Rio with friends, but because of a yellow fever outbreak there the Nile was quarantined and passengers were not allowed ashore. So her husband came to the Nile whenever he was off duty.
The Montgomery was soon sent to sea on a three-week cruise, and Edith traveled with the Nile to Pernambuco, Brazil, where she and her children spent most of October. They later traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and by January 1900 were in Montevideo, Uruguay, where the Montgomery was then stationed.6
By June 1900, when she was enumerated in the census, her husband was still on the Montgomery in Montevideo, but she and their children had returned to the United States and were living with her mother-in-law Ellie McCormick in Battletown Twp., Clarke Co., Virginia.7,8 She and Albert are listed with their children in Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland, in the 1910 census9, in Berkeley, Alameda Co., California, in 192010, and in Washington, D.C., in 1930.11
She was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, the Army and Navy chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Lloyd Williams Post of the American Legion Auxiliary of Berryville, Virginia, and was an active volunteer in the work of her church, and for Navy relief efforts.4

He was educated at the Potomac Academy in Alexandria, Fairfax Co., Virginia, then at the University of Maryland in College Park, Prince George's Co., Maryland, where he received his medical degree. He joined the U.S. Navy as an ensign on 23 July 1888, and was appointed an assistant surgeon. He served on the troop transport USS Panther during the Spanish-American War, and was at the Battle of Guantanamo Bay from 6-10 June 1898, serving both on board ship and ashore.2 In 1900 he was serving on the cruiser USS Montgomery at Montivideo, Uruguay5, and in 1910 was on the battleship USS Michigan.6
Rising through the ranks, he was named fleet surgeon for the Atlantic Fleet in 1910, and served at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, from 1910 to 1919. On 1 July 1918 he was promoted to rear admiral, and a year later was selected as inspector of all Navy medical department services on the west coast. From 1923 until 1930, when he retired, he served as president of three Navy organizations - the Board of Medical Examiners, the Naval Retirement Board, and the Navy Examining Board. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Military Surgeons of the United States, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.2
In addition to being listed on the USS Michigan in the 1910 census, he is also listed with his wife Edith and their children in Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland.7 They are listed in Berkeley, Alameda Co., California, in 19208, and in Washington, D.C., in 1930.9
