John Abbot Hathaway was born on 26 November 1889 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin.3,4 He married first Mena Pennifill, daughter of James Lurton Pennifill and Johanna Vaner, about 1913 (see below). They were divorced in August 1934 in San Diego Co., California.5 He married second Edith Dorothy Brownfield in July 1937 in San Diego Co., California.6 They were divorced, probably about 1940 (see below). He married third Erma K. McLane, daughter of Mortimer J. McLane and Maud Moore, on 4 May 1946 in Payson, Gila Co., Arizona.7,4 He died on 21 November 1963 at Gila General Hospital in Globe, Gila Co., Arizona, at age 73 from kidney disease.1 He was buried on 24 November 1963 at Pinal Cemetery in Central Heights, Gila Co., Arizona.4
His mother died a week after his birth, and he was apparently raised by his grandparents Frederick and Emily Lynde Abbot. He is listed with them in Milwaukee in the 1900 census at age 10, along with two nurses, a servant, and a cook.8
After his grandfather's death in 1903 he probably lived with his father and stepmother in Milwaukee3,9,10, then moved with them sometime between 1906 and 1909 to Easton, Talbot Co., Maryland, where they are listed in the 1910 census.11
The identification of John's first wife as Mena Pennifill is based on circumstantial evidence. First, the 1930 census lists him with a wife Mena, age 37.12 Second, there's a 1944 marriage record for Edward Francis Shannon and Mena P. Hathaway, daughter of James Lurton Penniefield and Johanna Vaner. Mena is listed as age 52, born in New York, divorced, and residing in San Diego.13 Third, the 1910 census for Princeton, Green Lake Co., Wisconsin, includes a listing for Johanna Pennifil with daughters Margaret Pennifil, age 21 born in Illinois, and Mena Pennifil, age 19 born in New York.14 And finally, there's a 1950 Wisconsin court case that quotes from the will of Johanna L. Pennifill, made 17 April 1945 in San Diego, naming "my daughters Marguerite Pennifill Hoffman and Mena P. Hathaway, now Mena P. Shannon."15
In 1917, when he registered for the World War I draft, he and Mena were living in Green Bay, Brown Co., Wisconsin.16 In the 1920 census they are listed in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was working as a record clerk at the Baltimore dry docks17, but by 1923 they had moved back to Wisconsin. They were living in Madison, Dane Co., from 1923 to 192518, and in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., in 1926, where he was working as a salesman for the Milwaukee Gas Light Company.19 Sometime between then and 1930 they moved to El Cajon Twp., San Diego Co., California, where they are listed in the 1930 census. He was then working as a fruit farmer.12
At some point after their divorce, Mena filed suit against John seeking to set aside the agreement they had made over property valued at more than $40,000. On 25 January 1937 the suit was denied in court.20
He and his second wife Dorothy are listed in El Cajon Twp. in the 1940 census with children Lewis Hathaway (13, born in Arizona) and Virginia Hathaway (12, born in Arizona), and his occupation is listed as "efficiency expert."21 Dorothy is listed a second time in the 1940 census, in a hotel in Palo Alto, Santa Clara Co., California, as Dorothy Hathaway. Also listed in the hotel, on the following census page, are Lewis and Dorothy Brownfield, ages 13 and 12. The children Lewis and Dorothy are actually Lewis Barrett Welch Jr. and Dorothy Virginia Welch, Dorothy Brownfield's children from her first marriage.22
No divorce record has been found for John and Dorothy, but their marriage was apparently short-lived. Despite their listing together in the 1940 census, other evidence indicates that they may have actually been living apart by then. As noted above, Dorothy and her children are listed a second time in the 1940 census in a hotel in Palo Alto. Dorothy Brownfield is also listed in the Palo Alto City Directory at 1227 Fulton Ave. from 1940-48, and her children, listed as Lewis and Virginia Brownfield, are at the same address in 1946.23 Further, John A. Hathaway is listed in the 1941 San Diego City Directory living with his father in Coronado, San Diego Co., California, with no mention of a wife,24 and in his 1942 registration for the World War II draft he listed his father as his contact person.2
From at least 1941 to 1944 he lived with his father in Coronado and worked as an accountant for the Consolidated Aircraft Corp. in San Diego.25,2 He moved to Payson, Gila Co., Arizona, about 1946, where he owned a grocery store1, then moved to Globe, Gila Co., in 1962.4
