His given name is listed as Francis in the 1850 census, but as Franklin (or Frank) in all other records.7
He served during the Civil War in Co. H of the 30th Michigan Infantry. This unit was organized quickly in late 1864 to guard the eastern Michigan-Canadian border, in response to fears of a raid by Confederate sympathizers and refugees in Canada. He enlisted for one year's service on 15 December 1864 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, and the regiment was mustered in on 9 January 1865. They were stationed along the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers in Michigan, and saw no action. He was promoted to corporal on 1 May 1865, and mustered out on 23 June 1865 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.8
Shortly after their marriage he and his wife Susan moved to Iowa, where their daughter Gettie was born in July 1877.9 They are listed in Clinton, Clinton Co., Iowa, in the 1880 census, along with Corie (age 20, born in Indiana) and Maud Robertson (18, Michigan), and Lizzie Rogers (36, Ohio). Lizzie is listed as Franklin's sister-in-law, and thus is probably Susan's sister. Corie and Maud are listed as daughters-in-law, but are probably actually Susan's daughters from her first marriage.10
He and Susan moved to Washington in 1887, where they lived the rest of their lives, except for a short period of time in San Francisco, California, in 1890.4 They are listed in the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Artondale Prec., Pierce Co., Washington.5,11
On 29 January 1917, a little less than a year after his wife's death, and in failing health with no assets, he applied for admission to the Washington Veterans Home in Retsil, Kitsap Co., Washington. His application was approved on 1 February, and he was admitted on 6 July 1917.4 He is listed there in the 1920 census, enumerated on 3 and 5 January, about three weeks before his death.12
He worked as a dyer and cleaner much of his life, but by 1910 had turned to farming and ranching.10,5,11,4,1

In 1900 she was living at home with her widowed mother in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, along with a lodger, Belle McLaughlin.4 Her mother died two years later, and in 1910 she was living as a roomer with the family of George Loveland, at 907 Lovell St. in Kalamazoo. Also rooming there was May Geary, age 38.7 She and May were still there in 1920, and had been joined by another roomer, Sarah Madison, age 39.8 In 1930 the three roomers, Nellie, May, and Sarah, were still living together, but had moved to 1413 Hillcrest in Kalamazoo.9 Nellie was at the same address in 1940, but living alone.10
She worked most of her adult life at Gilmore Brothers, the largest department store in Kalamazoo, and wrote "Gilmore Brothers Store from 1881 to 1944," the first section (of three) in a book published in 1944 on the store's history. She began there as a bookkeeper on 3 April 1893, and when the firm was incorporated on 10 August 1910 she was named secretary/treasurer. She retired in 1954 after 61 years with the store.11,12
Although she lived in Kalamazoo all her life, and never married5, she was apparently adventurous and loved to travel. In 1905 she and May Geary traveled to Portland, Oregon, "to visit the exposition" (the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition) and see other sights in the west. She and May also traveled together to New York City in 1911, and Nellie vacationed on the coast of Maine in 1912.13,14,15
In 1909, with three other women (May Geary, Bessie Goodrich, and Charlotte Waite), she spent over a month walking from Kalamazoo to her mother's birthplace of Sheffield, Massachusetts, "for the sheer love of the trip." Although a newspaper article about the trip describes them as "society girls" and "young women," Nellie was 42 at the time. The article notes that they were "prominent socially ... and all of good families."16
She also traveled to Europe at least once, with a woman named Lillian Parr in the summer of 1914. Their timing, right around the outbreak of World War I in Europe, resulted in some adventure on their return home. They left Germany by train, heading for Amsterdam, and Germany declared war a few hours after they boarded. (This must have been 1 August, when Germany declared war on Russia, or 3 August, when Germany declared war on France.) Theirs was the last passenger train allowed to leave, they were told. At various times along the way they had to leave the train, walk some distance, and then take a tram.
They finally made it to Antwerp, Belgium, where on 6 August they sailed for Boston on the British ship SS Marquette. They were escorted through the North Sea by British warships, and ordered to put out their lights and not use the radio. They were even stopped by a British warship just before arriving at Boston, after 11 days at sea on what Nellie called "a most interesting and exciting voyage."17,18
When she retired in 1954 at age 86, among her plans was to do more traveling than she had time for while working.12

He was living with his parents in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, in 1850, and like his father, working as a wagon maker.2 He is listed as a farmer in the 1860 census, but was living in a hotel in Otsego.4 In 1870 he was working as a miner in Mud Springs Twp., El Dorado Co., California. Also living in El Dorado Co., starting about July 1870, was his uncle Philip Burlingham, who mentions "Phil" a few times in letters sent to his family back in Michigan. From the letters, it appears that he (Philip Farnsworth) probably returned to Michigan in late 1870 or early 1871.5,6 He has not been found in the 1880 census, but in 1900 was living with his brother Stephen and his wife Mary in Wexford Twp., Wexford Co., Michigan.3 No occupation was listed for him in 1900, but he was listed as a merchant on his death certificate.1
He apparently never married, and is listed as single on his death certificate.1

The identification of Stephen Farnsworth's first wife as Laura Almeda Crawford, and their daughter as Laura Almeda Farnsworth, is based on a preponderance of evidence argument. First, in census entries for Stephen's father Moses Farnsworth in Barry Co., Michigan, the household included Laura A. Farnsworth (age 9, born in Missouri) in 1870, and Almeda Farnsworth (age 19, born in Missouri) in 1880. It's thus probable that Laura A. and Almeda Farnsworth are the same person, with the full name Laura Almeda Farnsworth. This conclusion is strengthened by a death certificate for Laura Almeda Wheeler, widow of Wm. Wheeler, born 27 February 1861 in Missouri, with parents Stephen Farnsworth and Almeda Crawford.
In addition, Stephen's death certificate lists his age at first marriage as 28, meaning his first marriage was about 1858. But his marriage to Mary (Cross) Riley was in 1874, so he was married at least twice. His death certificate also says he was the parent of just one child, who was still living in 1908. Mary's death certificate says she had four children, and the 1870 census entry for David and Mary (Cross) Riley lists four children. Thus Stephen's one child was from his first marriage, not his second.
Finally, the 1860 census for Meramec Twp., Jefferson Co., Missouri, lists Steph and Laura Farnsworth, ages 27 and 20, both born in Michigan. These ages are consistent with those from other sources for Moses Farnsworth's son Stephen, and for Laura Crawford, the daughter of Moses's second wife Almeda from her first marriage. This, together with the information on Laura Almeda Wheeler's death certificate noted previously, leads to the conclusion that Stephen Farnsworth's first wife was Laura Almeda Crawford, daughter of Harvey Nelson Crawford and Almeda Baker. Note that since Stephen's father Moses Farnsworth married as his second wife Laura's mother Almeda (Baker) Crawford, Stephen and his wife Laura were stepsiblings.5,6,7,1,4,8,9,10,11
Stephen was living with his parents in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, in 1850, and like his father, working as a wagon maker.12 As noted above, he and his first wife Laura are listed in the 1860 census in Meramec Twp., Jefferson Co., Missouri, where he was working as a sawyer. Living with them was John Hoffman, a carpenter.10 He and his second wife Mary lived in Wexford Twp., Wexford Co., Michigan, where he was a miller for a time, and later a farmer. Stephen's brother Philip was living with them in 1900.13,14

He and his wife Julia are listed in the 1880 census in Marilla Twp., Manistee Co., Michigan. Listed with them in addition to their own four children are Hattie B. Crothers (15), Lily A. Wheaton (13), and Nellie M. Farnsworth (11). Hattie and Lily are listed as stepdaughters, and are Julia's children from her previous two marriages. Nellie M. Farnsworth is listed as a daughter, but with a word in front of daughter, very lightly written but possibly "step," that has been crossed out. Her age means she would have been born about 1869, before Henry and Julia's marriage, and she is probably actually Nellie Wheaton, Julia's daughter from her previous marriage.4,5,6,7
In 1900 he was living in Pleasanton Twp., Manistee Co., Michigan, and listed in the census as a widower.8 He was still living in Pleasanton Twp. in 1910, as a boarder in the household of Daniel Malcolm.9
He was a farmer early in life, and later worked as a merchant and grocery store salesman.4,8,9,1
