Shortly after their marriage she and her second husband Franklin moved to Iowa, where their daughter Gettie was born in July 1877.4 They are listed in Clinton, Clinton Co., Iowa, in the 1880 census, along with Corie (age 20, born in Indiana) and Maud Robertson (18, Michigan), and Lizzie Rogers (36, Ohio). Lizzie is listed as Franklin's sister-in-law, and thus is probably Susan's sister. Corie and Maud are listed as daughters-in-law, but are probably actually Susan's daughters from her first marriage.5
She and Franklin moved to Washington in 1887, where they lived the rest of their lives, except for a short period of time in San Francisco, California, in 1890.6 They are listed in the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Artondale Prec., Pierce Co., Washington.3,7

On 4 May 1910 he was enumerated in the census in Plainwell, Allegan Co., Michigan, living as a boarder with the widow Emeline Kershaw and her daughter Jessie, who he would marry just ten days later.8 He and Jessie were again listed with her mother in Plainwell in the 1920 census, enumerated on 13 January 1920, three weeks before Jessie's death. Living with them was a 16-year-old servant, Mada Wager.9
He and his second wife Ida are both listed in Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, in the 1930 census, but in separate households. He is listed in Kalamazoo Twp. with his sister Alice and her husband Edwin Johnson (Ida's brother), while she and their daughter Alice are listed in the city of Kalamazoo in the household of George C. Parsons, where she was working as a housekeeper.10,11 He, Ida, and their daughter are listed together in the 1940 census, in Schoolcraft Twp., Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, along with a boarder, Alice Boardman.12
He worked at various jobs throughout his life. He was listed as a farmer in his two marriage records, in 1910 and 1921, and in the 1940 census1,3,12, as a railroad laborer in the 1910 census8, as a paper maker at the Michigan Paper Co. when he registered for the World War I draft in 19174, and as a salesman in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.13,14
