He was the last in his family to use slaves on his farm.2 He was a member of the Committee of Safety in Charlestown, Washington Co., Rhode Island, and spent $1000 of his own money to support the Revolution. After the war he received a grant for about 1000 acres of land near Marietta, Ohio, as repayment.2
He and his first wife Elizabeth had no children.2 He and his second wife Rebecca had the following known children: John R. (b 16 June 1783), Catherine (b 15 October 1784), James (b 13 May 1786), Benjamin (b 29 August 1788), a son (d as infant).2
