He served during the Civil War in Company A, 186th Regiment, New York Infantry. He was mustered in on 20 August 1864 in Wilna, New York, and mustered out on 18 July 1865 in Albany, New York, with an honorable discharge.1

He graduated from Syracuse University in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York, and later from Johnson Bible College in Binghamton, Broome Co., New York.2 He began his ministry at a Methodist church in Granby Center, Oswego Co., New York, in 1935.3 He became a Congregational minister in a suburb of Wilkes Barre, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania, in 1944.3 He moved to Dundee, Monroe Co., Michigan, in 1952.3 In 1959 he began his service as the minister at the Community Congregational Church in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana.3
He suffered a heart attack on Good Friday in 1981, and was unable to actively resume his ministry.4,5 He retired on 1 December 1981, and was immediately appointed Pastor Emeritus by the congregation. He was honored during an open house at his church on 22 November 1981.3,4
He was a member of the National Association of Congregational Churches, serving on its Spiritual Resources Commission, and of the National Association of Evangelists. He also served locally on the executive committee for crusades, and helped organize the Billy Graham Crusade at the University of Notre Dame.3
Charles and Verda Swikert, and their daughter Ruth Towne and her family, all belonged to the Community Congregational Church in South Bend, Indiana, where Rev. Harris was the minister. Rev. Harris also officiated at the wedding of Rebecca Towne and Mark Stradtner. Through their common ancestors Ephraim Stiles and Esther Moseley, Rev. Harris and Charles Swikert were third cousins, but never knew it.6

She graduated from Johnson Bible College in Binghamton, Broome Co., New York.2 She taught Sunday School for many years at the Community Congregational Church in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, where her husband was minister. She also taught piano and organ.2,3 She was ordained as a minister at the church on 4 October 1981.3 After her husband's death in 1995, she lived with her daughter Pat Morgan and her family.2 She was a member of the National Association of Congregational Churches.2
