     James Bancroft was baptized on 2 January 1757 in Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.¹ He married Sarah Parsons, daughter of Israel Parsons and Hannah Waitt, about 1783.² He died on 2 April 1803 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, at age 46.² He was buried at the Old Central Burying Ground on Boston Common in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.²
     He served in the Revolutionary War, commissioned as an Ensign in Col. Bridges' Regiment in May 1775, and as a Lieutenant in M. Jackson's Eighth Regiment on 12 May 1780. He was at the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston.² After the war he settled in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, becoming a grocer in the Back Street area.² He was inspector of customs in Boston in 1796 and 1798.² He was a charter member of the Society of the Cincinnati, and resigned in June 1793.²
     He and Sarah had the following known children, all born in Lynnfield, Essex Co., Massachusetts: James (b 30 December 1784, d 13 March 1855), Henry (b 9 August 1786, d 15 August 1872), Charles (b 1788), Harriet.²
