He served for five years during the Revolutionary War, first seeing action at Bunker Hill in 1775.2 Later that year he participated in Col. Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec. This was part of a two-pronged invasion, with the other half led by Gen. Richard Montgomery. Arnold's forces left Massachusetts on 5 September 1775 with about 1100 men. Their uncharted route through the Maine wilderness was thought to be about 180 miles, but it was actually almost twice that, with unforgiving terrain and bad weather. By the time they reached the St. Lawrence across from Quebec City in November, about 500 men had either turned back or died.
Despite being at a strategic disadvantage, and outnumbered two to one, Arnold demanded the city's surrender. The demand was rejected, and after hearing that the British were planning an attack, Arnold withdrew his forces 20 miles south to wait for Gen. Montgomery to arrive. Montgomery arrived on 1 December, with just under 600 men, and the combined forces began a siege of the city five days later. The British refused two American demands to surrender, and the siege was ineffective.
During a snowstorm in the early morning hours of 31 December, Arnold and Montgomery's combined forces attacked the city. The result was a disaster for the Americans. Montgomery was killed and Arnold was wounded. Out of a total of about 1200 men, about 80 were killed or wounded, and 430 were captured, including Thomas Stickney. He was held by the British until the surrender of Gen. Burgoyne in October 1777.2,3,4
He lived in Amherst, Hillsborough Co., New Hampshire, for a short time, then in Hillsboro, also in Hillsborough Co.2 In February 1790 he and his first wife Priscilla moved to Hartland, Hartford Co., Connecticut,2 then to Fairfax, Franklin Co., Vermont, in February 1792.2
