At a young age, Amos Stickney moved with his parents to Hartwick, Otsego Co., New York.2 In 1818 he moved to an area called the Holland Purchase, in Collins, Erie Co., New York, where he was one of the first settlers.2 He built the first sawmill there, and helped build the first school house.2

During the Revolutionary War Asa Stickney served as a private from Danvers, Essex Co., Massachusetts, in Capt. Jeremiah Page's company, and was paid for two days of service on 16 February 1776.2 From 29 June 1777 to 2 October 1777 he also served as a private from Danvers in Capt. Silas Adams's company, Col. Titcomb's regiment, in Rhode Island.2 He worked in the mills in Danvers for twenty years.2
