He was a master mariner, and made several trading voyages along the coast.2 He lived in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts, and in Falmouth, York Co., Maine.2
He served in the militia as a Corporal from Newbury from 16 November 1725 to 20 November 1725, under Lieut. Samuel Wheelwright.2
On 31 August 1730 he bought 60 rods of land in Newbury, with a house and well, from Marverick Gilman for £114.3 On 29 November 1734 he sold a house and land in Newbury, including a "quarter and a half a quarter of an acre," to William Rogers and Joseph Coffin for £120.4 On 18 May 1750 he, along with his wife Mary, Anthony Knight and his wife Elizabeth, and David Woodman and his wife Mary, sold the messuage (i.e., house, barn, and adjoining buildings) in Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachusetts, that had formerly belonged to Joseph Adams, deceased, to Richard Lee for £87.5
He and his second wife Mary had the following known children: Sarah (b 12 September 1735), Jacob (b 20 September 1737), Thomas (b 2 November 1739), Abigail.2

When Falmouth, York Co., Maine, was destroyed by the British on 18 October 1775, she lost buildings worth £270.1 She and her second husband David had the following known children: Sarah (b 12 September 1735), Jacob (b 20 September 1737), Thomas (b 2 November 1739), Abigail.1

His father died when he was just two years old, and on 28 February 1731 Deacon William Fisk was appointed as his guardian.2
He served as a corporal in Capt. John Goffe's Co., and was one of 44 men sent out as scouts from 26 April 1746 to 20 May 1746 to guard against Indian attacks. He was paid £1 8s 3 1/2 d for his time. Following this trip, he and 12 others were sent on another scouting trip, this time for ten days.2 On 24 August 1757 he enlisted in Capt. Anthony Towle's Co., charged with defending Fort Edward. He was discharged on 8 November 1757.2
James Stickney moved to Hampstead, New Hampshire, about 1752, and later to Bath, Grafton Co., New Hampshire, where he was one of the early settlers.2
He had the following known children: Mehitable, Reuben, Elizabeth, Lucy, Hannah, James, Polly, Moses, John, David, plus one additional daughter.2
