On 14 November 1705 he bought an acre of farmland in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts, from Henry Lunt for £15.4 On 23 April 1712 he bought another acre in Newbury from Edmund Titcomb for £17 10s.5
On 24 July 1733 he sold about two acres in Newbury, including a house and barn, to Stephen Pettingell for £260 in current money6, and shortly afterward moved to Hampton, New Hampshire.2
On 16 September 1734 he sold 2 1/4 acres of pasture near New Bridge in Newbury to James Pearson for £30.7 On 29 April 1736 he bought 1 3/4 acres in Newbury from Edward Richardson for £21.8
His son-in-law Nathaniel Gove was granted administration of his estate on 6 December 1758. The inventory included a house and barn, 31 acres of land, and a salt marsh.9

He was a successful merchant, selling goods he imported from London. One advertisement, from the 6 April 1774 issue of The Essex Journal and Merrimack Packet, listed "Phila. barr iron of all sizes, English and German Steel, London Pewter and Brass Kettles, Iron Hollow Ware of all sorts, Naval Stores, Cheshire Cheese and Butter, Fine and superfine Flour."2
On 15 April 1735 he bought land in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.3
On 31 January 1741/42 he was admitted to the First Church in Newburyport, Essex Co., Massachusetts.2
In 1757 he was included on the Alarm List of the Fifth Co. of Militia in Newbury.2
On 5 June 1750 he was chosen to help provide a school house for the Third Parish in Newbury.2 He served on a Grand Jury on 10 July 1765 and in 1766.2 On 23 March 1767 he was selected as a trustee to distribute money collected for the poor in the parish.2
On 20 June 1775 he sold 26 rods of land in Newburyport, that he had purchased from Daniel and Mary Marquand on 3 December 1766, including a house, shops, and other buildings, to his son William "for love, goodwill and affection," plus £100.4
His will was dated 21 June 1775, and proved on 11 July 1775. His wife Joanna was left £20 per year for life, plus the household furniture, in return for relinquishing her dower rights. In addition to what they had already been given, his daughter Anne was to receive £10 per year for eight years, and his daughter Mary was to receive £60 one year after his death. His son William was left just £1, having already received his share of the estate. His sons Thomas and Joseph were each left £266, 13s., 4d., to be paid one year and two years after his death, respectively. His son Benjamin was left half that amount, £133, 6s., 8d., to be paid when he reached age 21. His daughter Sarah was to receive £80 at age 21, or when she married if before age 21. His son John was named executor and was left the rest of the estate, consisting of a house, barn, and outbuildings in Newburyport, plus additional houses, barns, and land in Newbury.5

He served under Maj. Joseph Coffin in the Third Foot Co. from Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.2
On 6 February 1755 he bought 25 poles of land in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts, with a house and barn, from his brother John for £106, 13s., 4d.3 On 21 April 1772 he bought 18 acres in Newbury, with buildings, from John Jaques and his wife Sarah for £240.4 On 18 May 1773 he bought another house and barn in Newbury from Jonathan Ilsley for £100.5
He served on Grand Juries on 27 February and 9 March 1768, and on 28 March 1769.2 On 2 May 1786 he was chosen for a committee that was to lobby their representatives to the General Court to pass an act specifying "that the holders of public securities receive no more for said securities than they cost them, and no more interest than 6 per ct. for what said securities cost them."2
His son William was appointed administrator of his estate on 30 May 1791.6 The estate was inventoried on 22 July 1791, and included a house and barn, with 20 acres of plowed land and 18 acres of pasture, valued at £494, 35 additional acres of pasture valued at £105, a house, store, and barn in Newburyport valued at £300, plus a gun, books, cattle, farm tools, and a silver plate.7 On 6 November 1798 a committee was appointed to divide the estate, and on 25 September 1799 a portion was set off for his widow Wilthen, with the remainder divided into three equal parts. These parts were set off for his children Benjamin, William, and Sarah, and they were to pay the other heirs their portions of the estate.8
