Samuel Stickney was baptized on 6 March 1630/31 (in a 1678 deposition he is described as "aged about 45") in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England.2,3 He married first Julian Swan on 18 April 1653 ("2, 18, 1653") in Rowley, Essex Co., Massachusetts.4 He married second Prudence Leaver on 6 April 1674 in Bradford, Essex Co., Massachusetts.4 He died in 1709 in Bradford, Essex Co., Massachusetts.4
Soon after his marriage to his first wife Julian Swan he purchased a freehold in Rowley, Essex Co., Massachusetts, including a house, barn, and land, from William Acie.4 On 25 February 1661/62 he and his father leased for seven years half of several tracts of land in Rowley, that the town had received from the estate of Rev. Ezekial Rogers.4 He served as pound keeper in Rowley from 1662 to 1667.4
He was also granted a lot at Hog Island Marsh in 1667, and in Merrimack, Essex Co., Massachusetts, in 1670.4 On 23 April 1668 he bought two acres of land in Merrimack from Richard Swanne for £70.5 On 11 March 1669/70 he and his wife Julian sold 1 1/2 acres of land in Rowley, with a house, barn, orchard, and fruit trees, that had been purchased from William Acie, to Joseph Housley for £40.6
He and Julian moved to Merrimack about 1670. Settlement of the area began in 1649 when it was part of Rowley. The area took the name Bradford on 7 January 1672/73, and was incorporated about 1675.4 He took the oath of allegiance in Ipswich on 10 December 1678, the oath of fidelity in Bradford six days later, and became a freeman on 11 October 1682. He served as selectman in Bradford in 1671, 1681-82, 1689, 1691, and 1693-95, as constable in 1676, as surveyor of highways and fences in 1684, 1692, and 1707-08, and as tythingman in 1704. He also served on a grand jury on 13 April 1697 and on trial juries from 1701 to 1708. He was chosen as one of 66 representatives from Bradford on 8 May 1689 and 12 February 1689/90, to meet in Boston as part of a "council for the safety of the people, and conservation of the peace."4
On 29 November 1686 he and Samuel Dresser sold 67 acres in Boxford, Essex Co., Massachusetts, to Matthew Perry.7
On 28 January 1703/4 he granted to his son Samuel "for & in Consideration of ye love I bear" and "for his dutifullness to me" 120 acres in Bradford, plus half of his mowing ground, and all of his land rights in Rowley.8 About three months later, on 4 May 1704, "for & in consideration of love goodwill & affection, which I have & doe bear," he granted to his son William 80 acres of land in Bradford, with his house and barn, plus half of his upland and meadow in Rowley.9

On 4 May 1704 William Stickney's father gave him 80 acres of land in Bradford, Essex Co., Massachusetts, along with half of his meadow and mowing ground, half of his house (plus the other half at his father's death), and half of his upland and Crane meadow in Rowley.3
His widow Anne was appointed administrator of his estate on 19 May 1707. The inventory was filed 7 April 1709, and included a house, 14 acres of land, cattle, and books. The real estate was valued at £95, 15s., and the personal estate at £53, 18s., 6d. Another account, on 22 May 1710, had the same value for the real estate, but £67, 6s., for the personal estate. His widow was to receive 1/3 of the personal estate, plus 1/3 of the real estate for her use during her lifetime. The rest of the estate was to be divided equally among the children, except that the oldest son Jeremiah was to receive a double share. On 23 December 1723 a committee was appointed to divide the real estate, but they were unable to do so. Instead, the house and land was given to Jeremiah, and he was to pay £50 to his two brothers.3
He and Anna had two known children, Jeremiah (b 1 August 1702) and William (b 14 October 1704/05 (sic), d 6 February 1706/07).3
