He moved with his father to Preston, New London Co., Connecticut, probably abt 1742, when he was dismissed from the church in Newbury to the one in Preston.2,3 He then moved to Worthington, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, in 1760 (or shortly after 1765, according to Lord), and later to the Nine Partners area in Dutchess Co., New York.4,3 He was chosen Surveyor of Highways on 11 July 1768, Moderator of the town meeting on 11 October 1768, Selectman in 1769 and 1776, and agent of the court in March 1774. On 15 November 1744 he was selected to a committee "to put in force the Resolve of the Provincial Congress."
He was a Tory during the Revolutionary era, and in 1774, through "shrewdness and tact" he was instrumental in getting the town to declare the Non Importation Act for tea null and void. In 1777 he was elected to the General Court, but was soon recalled and censured due to his "flagrant toryism."3
