On 11 July 1931 she was selected as the winner of a "better baby" contest in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. Her mother's brother Carl Hanson, who was then suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease, liked to hold her, and urged her mother to enter her in the contest. Entrants were judged on their health, and after three preliminary rounds, the final determination was made by a panel of four doctors and four nurses. She received the $25 first prize. Carl died less than three weeks later, on 29 July 1931.4,5,6
She graduated on 31 May 1953 from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana, with a B.S. degree in home economics.7
While at Purdue she met her future husband John Park. She and two friends were on a triple blind date with three fraternity brothers - she with John, her sister Jeanne Dobbeck with Dave Bowditch, and Helen Bowditch (Dave's sister) with Walt Leonard. All three couples later married.3
