Benjamin Felton was baptized on 19 December 1604 at St. Nicholas Church in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.2,1 He married Mary Story on 2 September 1628 at St. Nicholas Church in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. She was described as "a sad burden to him" by Savage.2,3 He died before 25 March 1689, when John Bly was paid for digging his grave.4
He became a freeman of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, on 1 December 1628.1 He and his wife Mary came to Salem, Massachusetts, from Great Yarmouth in 1635, perhaps with his widowed sister-in-law Ellen and her children Nathaniel, Judith, and Margaret.2,1
He was granted a two-acre lot in Salem on 2 May 1636, a one-acre lot on 11 July 1636, and twenty acres in the Salem land grant that same year. On 14 August 1637 ten acres of his land in Bass River was granted to Mr. Youngs, and in return he was granted ten acres near Darby's Fort. He was granted 3/4 acre on 25 December 1637, based on a household of four people.2,4
In September 1635 the General Court ordered that his servant Robert Scarlet was to be whipped for running away. In October 1636 Felton wanted to dismiss him for his actions, but the Court ruled that "having hope of amendment [he] is admitted to stay."5
He became a freeman in Salem on 22 May 1639.2 He served on petit juries in Salem on 27 November 1655, 24 June 1656, 28 June 1659, and 26 June 1660, on a grand jury on 27 November 1666, and on a coroner's jury on 8 June 1668. He was named Constable in 1655, 10 November 1660, and 13 December 1661. He was also a frequent witness on deeds and other legal documents.2,4 On 15 November 1651 he was chosen to take care of the meeting house, which was near where he lived.2,4
On 8 February 1659[/60?] he bought a house in Salem with 1/4 acre of land from Charles Gott for £12. On 27 February 1659[/60?] he "laid claim to 5 acres of land in the South Field." He later bought additional property from Gott, and on 29 November 1681 he sold some of this property to Jeremiah Rogers.2,4
By trade he was a farmer and turner (i.e., potter or lathe operator).4 He was appointed as prison keeper in Salem on 29 June 1669, a position he held until 1684. On 19 June 1676 the prison was moved "into Benajmin Felton's garden." He apparently had prisoners do work for him at times. On 24 September 1672 a deposition by Edmond Bridges stated that "the keeper of Salem prison had often been known to take prisoners out of prison to help him about his own occasions, and sometimes men have run away in the meantime."2,4

Nicholas Felton (?-1626). Unknown artist, 1623, Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol, England, Acc. No. K991. Via Wikimedia Commons.
Nicholas Felton was baptized on 3 August 1563 at St. Nicholas Church in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.2 He married Elizabeth Baker, daughter of John Baker, in 1588.1 He died on 5 October 1626 at age 63.1 He was buried on 6 October 1626 under the communion table at St. Antholin's Church in Budge Row, London, England.1
He enrolled at Queens' College, Cambridge University, on 26 June 1577 as a pensioner (i.e., without a stipend). He received his B.A. degree from Pembroke Hall, Cambridge University, in 1580, and became a fellow there in 1583. In 1584 he received an M.A. degree, and in 1587 was appointed as Greek lecturer. He earned degrees from Pembroke Hall equivalent to a Bachelor of Divinity in 1591, and Doctor of Divinity in 1602.1
On 17 January 1595/96 he was named rector of St. Mary LeBow in Cheapside, London, England, by John Whitgift, the archbishop of Canterbury. In later years he served as rector of Blagdon in Somerset, Easton Magna in Essex, and St. Antholin's in Budge Row, London. He was also named a prebendary (an honorary title recognizing service to the church) of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and served as chaplain to King James I.1,3
He was one of the 54 translators that created the King James Version of the Bible, which took place from 1604 to 1611. They were divided into six groups, with his group, the Second Westminster Company, translating the Epistles.1,4
In June 1605 he was apparently quite ill, and was living in Great Yarmouth where he was born, perhaps to recuperate. A letter dated 26 June 1605 from his friend Francis Morris to Sir Basingbourne Gawdy refers to Felton's "studies wherein he hath already almost consumed himself, the more pity and grief to all that know his worth." The Felton genealogy speculates that the "studies" referred to were associated with his work as one of the Bible translators.1
In 1612 it appeared that the position of Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge, then held by Samuel Harsnet, bishop of Chichester, would soon be a vacant. Lancelot Andrewes, the bishop of Ely and a friend of Nicholas Felton, strongly recommended him for the position, saying that he would "heal the dissensions then long prevailing, and prove a good head to a good house else likely to sink." Harsnet continued as master for five more years, however, until 4 March 1616/17, when Felton was selected as his successor.1,3
On 14 December 1617 he was consecrated as bishop of Bristol by Archbishop Abbot, with his friend Lancelot Andrewes assisting. He was still serving as master of Pembroke College, and the college sent a delegation to the Duke of Buckingham asking for permission to retain him as the master. After several months, however, Felton resigned from his position at Pembroke. In 1619 Andrewes was translated to Winchester, and Felton was selected as his successor as bishop of Ely on 2 March 1618/19. As bishop he was described as being "a profound scholar, a painful (i.e., diligent) preacher, conspicuous for his hospitality and charity."1,3
His will was dated 27 July 1625 and proved on 7 October 1626. He left £200 to his son Nicholas, and £400 to his son Robert, the bulk of which he wished to be used for the education and support of Robert's children. He also left £20 to each of Robert's children, and forgave any debts owed him by Robert. The wives of his two sons were each left £20. He also left legacies to his stepsons from his wife Elizabeth's first marriage. His nephew John Felton, son of his brother John (and father of the immigrant Nathaniel Felton) was left £50, and was also to receive an interest-free loan of £200 for a period of three years. His brother John's son Benjamin was left £40, as was John's wife. His brother Daniel was left £100, plus £20 to buy a basin or ewer. His sons were named executors, and were asked to carry out his wishes "with that unity, peace and love which becometh brethren in the performance of a father's will." Within two years, however, the two sons were fighting each other in court over the terms of the will.1

He and Elizabeth may have had a fourth son in addition to those listed here, named Stewart. Nicholas' will mentions "my son Stewart's widow and daughter of my brother John Felton," but no other record has been found for a Stewart Felton. The Felton genealogy says that this may be a transcription error, and that the will may actually say "my son's steward's widow."1

It should be noted that the Dictionary of National Biography (Vol. 18, pp. 308,309) lists his birth year as 1556. However, more recent research using the records of St. Nicholas Church in Great Yarmouth, England, show that he was baptized in 1563, the son of John Felton and Margaret Manning who were married in 1559.

FatherJohn Felton1
MotherMargaret Manning1
Relationship11th great-granduncle of Jane Ellen Bowditch
Daniel Felton was baptized on 18 February 1571/72 at St. Nicholas Church in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.1 He married Catherine Stafford, daughter of John Stafford and Joan Hawkins.1 He died before October 1631.1
On 21 November 1586 Daniel Felton was apprenticed to Richard Brattle, a liveryman (i.e., a full or senior member) of the Grocers Company in London (a trade organization responsible for regulating the purity of spices and for setting various weights and measures), for a period of eight years. His apprenticeship ended on 6 November 1594, when he was sworn as a freeman (i.e., a junior member) of the Company. On 26 March 1613 he was selected as a liveryman, and on 17 August 1624 became one of the Company's Assistants. He was then assigned the duty of renter, responsible for collecting the rent for the various properties owned by the Company, and distributing them as directed. In that position he would automatically advance in the Company as those senior to him were retired. However, when he was to move up to the position of second Warden, not long before his death, he declined the position.1
He and Catherine had at least one child by 1601, referred to but not named in the will of Daniel's father John. The Felton genealogy speculates that the "cousin Philip Felton" mentioned immediately after Daniel in the will of Daniel's brother Nicholas may be Daniel's son. It also speculates that another son may be the John Felton, born abt August 1631, who went to Barbados and died there 14 May 1694.1
