According to Savage's Genealogical Dictionary Nathaniel Felton originally came to Salem, Massachusetts, in 1633. This is consistent with a deposition he made on 6 April 1705 in which he said he had been in Salem for 72 years. Again according to Savage, he went back to England in 1634, and returned to Salem in 1635. The Felton genealogy hypothesizes that the 1633 trip was probably a scouting trip, and that he returned to England to bring other family members (his mother Ellen, uncle Benjamin Felton and his wife Mary, and sisters Judith and Margaret) to New England.5,3
He was granted two acres of land in Salem in 1637 and in 1643 he sold a lot and house in Salem to William Brown. He moved to Felton Hall in Salem (an area later part of Danvers, and now Peabody) about 1645, where he lived the rest of his life.6
He was admitted to the church in Salem on 13 August 16484,6 and became a freeman in 1649.6 He served multiple times on both petit and grand juries between 1648 and 1680, often as the jury foreman. He also served as a selectman, in 1682.6 He was named sergeant in 1669, ensign in 1679, and lieutenant in 1681.6
In the annals of Salem, Rev. Dr. Felt calls him "a man of good faith and judgment," and says he was "frequently called upon to give his testimony about litigated estates." He was the overseer and appraiser for the estates of his brother-in-law Christopher Waller, and of his daughter Hannah's father-in-law Zerubbabel Endicott. The Felton genealogy lists seventeen others, and says the list is probably incomplete.7
During the Salem witchcraft trials in 1692, he signed at least two petitions in support of those accused of witchcraft. The first was for Rebecca Nurse, about 1 May 1692, and said "we have known her for many years and according to our observation her life and conversation was according to her profession and we never had any cause or grounds to suspect her of any such thing as she is now accused of." The second, about 5 August 1692, was for John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth, and said "we never heard or understood that they were ever suspected to be guilty of the crime now charged upon them," and that "they lived Christian life in their family and were ever ready to help such as stood in need of their help." Rebecca Nurse was executed on 19 July 1692, and John Proctor on 19 August 1692.8
His will was dated 4 October 1703 and recorded on 6 March 1706. In it he first notes that he had already given portions of his estate, including land, to his sons John and Nathaniel, and daughters Ruth and Hannah, at the time of their marriages. But he had not given any land to his daughter Elizabeth, who was then a "desolate and solitary widow & under great bodily weakness." Therefore, he left his house and the adjoining ten acres of land to Elizabeth for her use during her lifetime, after which it was to go to his sons John and Nathaniel or their heirs, divided equally between them. Elizabeth also received two acres of pasture land, all of his movable goods, and all of his livestock. His sons John and Nathaniel were left the pasture lands adjoining land he had already given them, with the condition that his daughter Elizabeth was to have use of it for three cows and three cords of wood each year. His daughters Ruth and Hannah each were left 5s. His sons John and Nathaniel were named executors.1,9

He enrolled at Clare Hall (now Clare College), part of Cambridge University, on 7 July 1608, and received a B. A. in 1611/12 and an M. A. in 1615.3 His first ministry was at the Parish of Sempringham, Lincolnshire, England. He then moved to Tattershall, Lincolnshire, England, where he was not the minister, but probably served as House Chaplain to the Earl.4
He and his wife Susanna came to New England from Tattershall in 1629 on the George Bonaventure, one of six ships and about 350 settlers in the Higginson Fleet. (The others were the Talbot, Lyon's Whelp, Four Sisters, Mayflower (not the same ship as the more famous Mayflower that landed at Plymouth), and the Pilgrim.)3,5 They settled in Salem, Massachusetts,3 where he requested admittance as a freeman on 19 October 1630, and was formally admitted on 18 May 1631.3 He was granted 200 acres of land in Salem called "Skelton Neck."4
He was one of the founders of the First Church in Salem on 20 July 1629, along with Gov. John Endicott and Rev. Francis Higginson, and served as its first pastor. He was also spiritual advisor to Gov. Endicott.3,1 According to John Winthrop, Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in 1633 Rev. Skelton expressed his disapproval of the bi-weekly group meetings of the colony's ministers because he thought it might become a threat to the independence of the various churches.3

After her husband's death in 1627, she carried on his brewery business in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.1 She probably immigrated to Salem, Massachusetts, from Great Yarmouth in 1635, perhaps with her children Nathaniel, Judith, and Margaret, and brother-in-law Benjamin Felton and his wife Mary.1 She was granted twenty acres of land in Salem in 1636 and 1637, and thirty acres in 1639.3 In 1652 she was granted four acres of meadow on the north side of the Ipswich River in Salem.3 On 28 January 1652/53 ("in 1652, the 28th of the 11 month") she sold a house with twenty rods of land near the North River in Salem to William Marston.3

The Felton genealogy by William Reid Felton lists this John Felton, who married Mary Tompkins and Hannah (--?--), as the son of Nathaniel and Mary (Skelton) Felton, with a birth date of abt 1645. In the more recently published The Great Migration series, however, he is listed as the son of Benjamin and Mary (Story) Felton, with a baptism date of 26 December 1639. The Felton genealogy does list a John Felton as a son of Benjamin and Mary (Story) Felton, with a baptism date of 26 December 1639, agreeing with The Great Migration series, but doesn't list a wife or children, and says he probably left Salem in 1685. The William Reid Felton genealogy is primarily based on an earlier book by Cyrus Felton, which contains the same information but gives no sources. Until (and unless) additional research is done to clarify the situation, it's assumed that The Great Migration series is correct, and this John Felton is listed here as the son of Benjamin Felton.1,3
In Salem he served as constable in 1685 and 1687, juryman in 1693 and 1694, and highway surveyor from 1693 to 1695.2 On 25 June 1713 he and his wife Hannah, along with 38 others, were dismissed from the First Church in Salem to begin a new church in the Middle Precinct (now Peabody).2 His will was dated October 1715 and proved in March 1718.2
