Her father's surname may have been Bodford. Her death certificate lists her as the daughter of Margaret McMahan, but lists her father's name as unavailable,2 and no birth record has been found for her online. Her children Stella and Talmadge are listed in her obituary as Stella Devlin and Talmadge Hall6, but aren't listed in her husband Mark's obituary. Further, Social Security records list Stella (McMahan) (Devlin) Reese, born 24 September 1919 in Micaville, Yancey Co., North Carolina, as the daughter of Samuel McMahan and Estelee Bodford,7 and Talmage McMahan, born 13 May 1921 in Celo, Yancey Co., as the son of Sam McMahan and Estalee Bodford.8 Other indirect evidence suggests her father may have been William Henry "Bud" Bodford.9
She is listed in the 1920 census as single, living with her mother Margaret McMahan in Crabtree Twp., Yancey Co., North Carolina.3 She is listed in Crabtree Twp. with her husband Marcus in the 1930 and 1940 censuses.10,11
She and her husband Mark owned and worked tobacco fields, with the money they earned used to buy Christmas gifts for their children.12
