In many records his surname appears as Iman.2
He was a minister in the second degree in the German Baptist Brethren Church. Members were known as German Baptists, or more colloquially as Dunkers, since the founding of the first American congregation in 1723, but the name "German Baptist Brethren Church" was not officially adopted until 1871. The name was again changed in 1908, to the Church of the Brethren.5,6
In 1828 he and his first wife Susanna moved to Carroll Co., Indiana, from Montgomery Co., Ohio, settling on Deer Creek near what is now the town of Camden.5 A congregation of the German Baptist Church was established at Deer Creek, probably in 1830, and Peter Eyman was ordained as an elder (i.e., minister of the third degree, or head minister).
Disagreements soon arose between Eyman and Peter Replogle, a congregation member who had become a minister in 1829. As a result, in 1838 the congregation was split geographically, but with an irregular dividing line to accommodate the followers of both sides. Replogle became the head of the Deer Creek church, and Eyman became the head of a new congregation at Bachelor Run. The Bachelor Run congregation became the larger group, encompassing most of Carroll Co., plus parts of White Co. and Howard Co.
After a time Eyman, "a man of considerable influence and ability," became dissatisfied with some of the church's rituals and beliefs. His preaching, along with that of a younger minister in his congregation named George Patton, caused much controversy. To address the issues a general conference, the first ever held in Indiana, met at John Kuns's house near Delphi in Carroll Co. from 23 to 27 September 1848. The findings of the conference with respect to the troubles were summarized in the minutes as follows:
In regard to the difficulties of the Bachelor Run church with brothers Oyman [Eyman] and Patton and others, the brethren in general council considered that there had been committed errors on both sides, in consequence of which many members of both sides made satisfactory acknowledgments before the meeting, and it was concluded that with such, all that is past should be forgiven and forgotten, and with as many as may come and make satisfaction and that they should all be received into full fellowship and Brother David Fisher in his office as full speaker. Furthermore, this meeting considers and councels that Brothers Oyman and Patton, and such others that hold with them, should yet have time to reflect and should they come, also, in a reasonable space of time and make satisfactory acknowledgment, then the church should also forgive them. But if they should persist in their contrary course, going on holding meetings in opposition to the church, and even become railers of the church, there would be no other way but to put them in full avoidance according to First Corinthians 5.
While some of the followers of Eyman and Patton did eventually return to the established church, the two leaders did not, and they were "disfellowshiped" during a council meeting held in Jacob Flora's barn.
At a meeting held at Peter Eyman's house, but led by George Patton, the breakaway group decided to establish their own church. They took the name Church of God, sometimes colloquially referred to as New Dunkers. Eyman died not long afterwards, in January of 1852, and Patton became their leader. The new church grew slowly, and existed without an actual building until 1872. Congregations were eventually organized in Indiana in Carroll, Cass, Henry, Pulaski, Wayne, and White counties, and the membership grew to perhaps 1500. Over time membership declined, however, and the church was formally disbanded in August 1962.5,6,7
Peter Eyman, his wife Susanna, and their daughter Elizabeth, are listed in the 1850 census in Jackson Twp., Carroll Co., Indiana.8
