Mary Elizabeth Dana Morse was probably born on 2 May 1827 or 1828, in either Woodstock, Windsor Co., Vermont, or in Massachusetts. (Her death certificate says she was born 2 May 1827 (although her death certificate also says she died at age 83 years, 7 months, 7 days, which gives a birth date of 26 April 1827).1 The Morse genealogy by Lord says 2 May 18283, the 1900 census says May 18304, and her cemetery marker says 1828.5 Her marriage record says she was born in Woodstock2, and the 1900 census says Vermont.4 All other census records (cited below) say Massachusetts.) She married Ezra St. Clair Hutchins, son of Ezra Child Hutchins and Augusta A. St. Clair, and brother of her brother Richard's future wife Helen Hutchins, on 13 December 1854 in Brighton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.2 She died on 3 December 1910 in Brookline, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, from colon cancer.1 She was buried on 6 December 1910 at Mount Auburn Cemetery (Lily Path, Lot 502) in Cambridge, Middlesex Co.1,6
She is listed in the 1850 census, before her marriage, living with her uncle James Dana (her mother's brother) and his wife Pamela in Brighton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.7
She and her husband Ezra are listed in Newton, Middlesex Co., in the 1855 and 1865 state censuses, and the 1870 federal census. (They have not been found in 1860.) Living with them in 1855 was Bridget Carroll (age 25), and in 1865 was Catherine Collins (21), both probably servants.8,9,10 They are listed in Sherborn, Middlesex Co., in the 1880 census, along with Jennie Robertson (17), a housekeeper, and Patrick Wall (60), a farm laborer.11
At some point after her husband's death in 1898 she moved in with her daughter Amelia and her husband Henry Frost in Brookline, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, and is listed with them there in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.4,12
