He was born on the family farm in Springfield Twp., Sangamon Co., Illinois, that was originally settled by his grandfather Lewis McKinnie in 1827, and lived there all of his life.7 He was a farmer, with 80 acres in Section 18 of Springfield Twp.2 In 1880 his parents and sister J. F. were living with him there, along with boarders G. Huntley (age 17), Martha McKinney (age 19, born in Illinois, parents born in England), and Mary Jones (age 50, born in Virginia, and probably his mother's sister). Next door was his uncle William McKinnie and his family.3 He and his second wife Sophia are listed there in the censuses from 1900 to 1920, with their daughters Eleanor and Bernice in 1900, and with Bernice in 1910.9,10,11
He was interested in education, and held office in the local school system.2
