He and his wife Sarah lived on a farm four miles northwest of Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois, on land that was originally settled by his parents in 1827.4 They are listed there, in Springfield Twp., in the censuses of 1850 to 1880. In 1850 they are listed with their children Mary, William, Henry, and Columbia. In 1860 they are listed with their children Mary, William, Columbia, and Julia (although the census taker used only initials for first and middle names). In 1870 they are listed with their son Wm., and daughters Columbia and Josie. Listed in the same household were Wm. Gill (age 18, farmer) and Geo. Tiger (age 17, farm laborer). In 1880 their son William is listed as the head of the household, and Thomas is listed as a "retired farmer.".
In 1850 Thomas's oldest brother Andrew and his family were living next to them. But in 1860, 1870, and 1880 they were living next to his brother William's family. Unless Thomas and his family moved sometime between 1850 and 1860, it's likely that William took over the family farm after Andrew's death in 1855.6,7,8,1

Lewis McKinnie's father, it is said, was born aboard a ship in the mid-Atlantic when his parents were emigrating from Scotland to America.2
In 1820 Lewis McKinnie traveled to Sangamon Co., Illinois, to visit two of his children who had moved there.2 He and his wife Nancy moved there themselves in 1826, arriving on 15 November. They immediately started building their own house four miles northwest of Springfield, and moved into it in February 1827.1,2
