He started at Harvard University in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, in 1839, but left in the spring of his junior year due to lung issues.3
He then went to sea as a supercargo (the ship's owner's representative, responsible for overseeing the cargo and its sale) for N. L. Rogers & Brother, a company his father was associated with. He was later master of the clipper ship Thomas Perkins for several years, and in 1849 made the trip from New York to San Francisco in 126 days, considered a very fast time in those days. In 1851 he became master of the new clipper ship Witchcraft. On one voyage, they left New York on 4 April 1851, but became dismasted in a storm and were forced to stay in Rio de Janeiro for repairs. From there they sailed to San Francisco in a record 62 days.3
He enlisted for service in the Civil War, first serving as commander of the barque Wm. G. Anderson, then commander of the USS Huntsville, and then commander of the USS Iuka as part of the Eastern Gulf Squadron. He was assigned to shore duty on 15 June 1865, and resigned a year later, on 16 Jul 1866.6
He had retired from active business activity due to health issues before the war, but remained as a silent partner in J. S. Morgan & Co., a London banking firm with offices in Boston. He was also a co-trustee during the establishment of the Eastern Railroad Co., managing the merger of several smaller railroads.6
