He and his first wife Ann had one child, Zebulon (b 20 June 1818, killed 27 June 1864 while serving during the Civil War).2 He and his second wife Miriam had the following known children: twins Thomas (b 1 December 1823, d 5 March 1864) and Catharine (b 1 December 1823), Caroline, Maria (d 20 August 1875), Emily (d 1848).2

In 1840 William P. McKinnie and his wife Sarah settled on a farm adjoining his father's, four miles northwest of Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois.1 He is listed as a farmer in the 1870 census in Springfield Twp., Sangamon Co., Illinois, with his wife Sarah, along with their sons Virgil and Chas., and daughters Nancy, Frances, and Harriet.2 They are listed there again in 1880 (William is listed as retired), along with their daughter L. J. and her husband Wm. Gill, son C. E., and grandson F. E. Judd. Their sons Thomas and William, and their families, lived nearby.3

In 1876 she and her husband William were living near his father, four miles northwest of Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois.1 She and William had at least two known children, sons I. L. (b abt 1875) and J. W. (b abt 1877).3
