FatherThomas Mosher1 b. 20 Apr 1760, d. 11 Jan 1812
MotherIrene Carpenter1 b. 4 Apr 1765, d. Apr 1846
Alfred Carpenter Mosher was born on 17 May 1787 in Sharon, Windsor Co., Vermont.1 He married first Huldah Morse, daughter of Anthony Morse and Huldah Taylor, on 1 July 1811 in Sharon, Windsor Co., Vermont.5 He married second Sarah Weatherbee on 11 July 1826.6 He married third Hannah Deming on 26 May 1836 in Ashtabula Co., Ohio.7 He married fourth Jane Johnston on 22 August 1846. Alfred's fourth wife Jane (Johnston) Thayer was the mother of his son William's wife Margaret Thayer.6 He died on 20 March 1874 in Lenox Twp., Ashtabula Co., Ohio, at age 86.8,9 He was buried at East Lenox Cemetery in Lenox Center, Ashtabula Co., Ohio.10
He and his first wife Huldah may have had a rocky start to their marriage. In February 1813, about five months after the birth of their first child, Alfred placed a notice in a Windsor, Vermont, newspaper saying that as of 18 February he would not be responsible for his wife Huldah's debts because she "has left my board and protection and refuses to live with me & perform the duties of the marriage covenant." They apparently reconciled, however, and had five more children together.11
He is listed in Troy, Rensselaer Co., New York, in the 1820 and 1830 censuses.12,13 He moved his family to Lenox Twp., Ashtabula Co., Ohio, in 1831, traveling first by canal boat to Buffalo, New York, then by ship on Lake Erie to Ashtabula14, and is listed there in Lenox Twp. in the 1840 census.15 In the censuses from 1850 to 1870, when the names of everyone in the household were recorded, he is listed in Lenox Twp. with his fourth wife Jane.16,17,18
His will was dated 15 February 1864, and proved in court on 28 March 1874 in Jefferson, Ashtabula Co. He left all his real estate in Lenox Twp., about 98 acres, to his son Joel, except his widow Jane was to have her dower interest in the property while living. Joel was to pay $100 within one year to each of Alfred's daughters Huldah A. Corliss, Sarah Jane Powlis, Frances Irena Mosher, and Mary E. Mosher, and to his sons Albert H. Mosher and Thomas A. Mosher, plus $50 each to his grandchildren George A. Mosher and Charles H. Mosher, children of his deceased son William H. Mosher. All the household goods not belonging to his widow were left to his daughters. The remainder was to go to his children equally, plus one share to his two grandchildren.19

Also with them in 1870 was Mary Powless, age 24, born in New York. This is probably their recently-deceased son Alfred's widow Mary (Watts). They had two servants in 1850, a family of four in 1860, three in 1870 (erroneously listed in the census with the surname Powless), and one in 1880.8,6,9,10
She is again listed in Harrington Twp. in the 1900 census, after her husband's death, along with her daughter Margaretta.11

William Henry Mosher was born on 18 June 1821 in Troy, Rensselaer Co., New York.1,4,3 He married Margaret Euphenia Thayer, daughter of Calvin Thayer and Jane Johnston, on 24 December 1849 in Lenox Twp., Ashtabula Co., Ohio.5,1,4 He died on 8 November 1853 (the Mosher genealogy says 1854) in Lenox, Ashtabula Co., Ohio, at age 32, from a disease he initially contracted while serving in the Mexican War.6,7,4,8 He was buried at East Lenox Cemetery in Lenox Center, Ashtabula Co., Ohio.9
On 19 June 1839 he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Cleveland, Ohio, in the 2nd Artillery Division, Company E, for five years service. He gave his age as 21, but had actually just turned 18 the day before. He was discharged on 4 February 1840, after serving about 7 1/2 months, at Lockport, New York, with the reason given as "Civil Authority."10
Eight years later, on 26 April 1847 under the name Charles Franklin, he enlisted again, this time in Buffalo, New York, for service with the 10th Infantry Division during the Mexican War. He was discharged on 24 August 1848 at Matamoras, Mexico, when his term expired. Why he enlisted under a different name is unklnown; it may have had something to do with the circumstances of his earlier discharge.11,12
After the war he returned to Ohio, and he and his wife Margaret are listed in the 1850 census in Austinburg Twp., Ashtabula Co.13, where he was working as a harness maker.13

He moved to Lenox Twp., Ashtabula Co., Ohio, at age 7, when his father moved the family there in 1831.7
After their marriage he and his wife Elizabeth lived on the family farm in Lenox Twp. for a short time.7 They and their children are listed in Ashtabula Co. in the censuses from 1850 to 1880, in Ashtabula District 7 in 1850, in Ashtabula Twp. in 1860, in Ashtabula Borough in 1870, and in Ashtabula Village in 1880.12,13,14,15 They later moved to a farm in Ashtabula Twp.7, and Thomas is listed there in the 1900 census, after his wife's death, along with his divorced daughter Catherine Hendershot and her daughter Florence.5
As a young man he captained passenger ships on Lake Erie, and he is listed as a sailor in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.9,12,13 According to his obituary, he also worked in the construction of several ships, later went into the lumber export business, and was in charge of the first swing bridge constructed at Ashtabula Harbor.9 However, he is listed as a fire insurance agent in the 1870 census14, as a mail carrier in 188015, and as a farmer in 1900.5
His will was dated 8 November 1904, and proved in court on 1 April 1905. He left all his personal property to his daughter Catherine.
