At some point he moved to Surry, Hancock Co., Maine, then to Bucksport, Hancock Co., where he died.3 It's possible that he and his wife Carolyn separated. She died after he did, and her obituary says she'd been a resident of Mount Tabor, New Jersey, since 1936. However, her obituary refers to him as her husband.4

He grew up in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York, where his mother moved after the death of his father in 1853.8 He and his wife Laura are listed there in the 1875 state census living as boarders with Eugene Vanhosen and his wife.9 They soon moved into their own home, and were listed with their children in Syracuse in the 1880 federal census and the 1892 state census. In 1880 Laura's brother Herbert was living with them, and they had a servant.10,11 George was working as a stationary salesman in 1875, and by 1880 was running his own bookstore. He also helped organized a Congregational church in Syracuse, and ran the Sunday school.5
In 1900 the family moved to Oberlin, Lorain Co., Ohio.5 In the 1900 census, perhaps in the middle of their move, George and their son Clifford were listed as roomers in the home of Lucy Seymour in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York,12 while Laura and the other children were living in the home of Clara Hannon in Chautauqua, Chautauqua Co., New York.13
After moving to Oberlin he worked for Burroughs Bros. book dealers in Cleveland5, then in 1905 was named superintendent of the Lorain County Children's Home in Oberlin.3 He and Laura are listed living there at the Children's Home in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. George's widowed mother Margaret was living with them in 1910.14,15 He retired as superintendent around 1925, and took a position with the Carnegie library.5
