William Henry Powless1

MotherSarah Jane Mosher1 b. 29 Jan 1819, d. 16 May 1904
Relationship2nd cousin 3 times removed of Jane Ellen Bowditch
William Henry Powless was born on 9 June 1853 in Harrington Twp., Bergen Co., New Jersey.2,3 He was baptized on 11 September 1853 at the Old North Church in Dumont, Bergen Co., New Jersey.4 He married Anna F. Holliday, daughter of V. G. Holliday, on 25 December 1887 in Como, Park Co., Colorado.5 He died on 2 November 1949 at the Boulder Sanitarium in Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, at age 96.6,7 He was buried at Green Mountain Cemetery (Sect. C, Row D, Grave 28) in Boulder.6
He graduated from the Englewood Institute in Englewood, Bergen Co., New Jersey, and went on to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, Rensselaer Co., New York, graduating in 1874. After graduation he worked on a boundary survey between Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey, and as the U.S. assistant engineer for surveys and improvement of the Blackwater River in Virginia. He returned to R.P.I. in 1875, where he taught for three years, then joined Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, Albany Co., New York, as a draftsman. From December 1878 to March 1884 he was U.S. assistant engineer for surveys, working on Mississippi River improvement along the Plum Point and New Madrid reaches.8 He's listed in the 1880 census in Fulton, Lauderdale Co., Tennessee, as a civil engineer with the U.S. Civil Engineer Corps.9
In March 1884 he moved to Alma, Park Co., Colorado, where he worked as a civil and mining engineer, county surveyor, and federal mineral surveyor.8,7 He also served there as a served as a Park Co. commissioner, school board member, and mayor.7
He and his wife Anna are listed in Alma, Park Co., Colorado, in the censuses from 1900 to 1920. Their grand-nephew Clyde Haring, son of William's niece Kittie (Kline) Haring, was living with them in 1900.
In 1910 Claude, Clarence, and Maude Powless, ages 16, 14, and 8, are listed with them as their children, and Anna is listed as having had three children, all then living. This is apparently wrong. No other records have been found for them, they aren't listed with William and Anna in 1900, and Anna is listed in 1900 as having no children. William's and Anna's ages are also significantly wrong (listed as 54 and 51, when they were actually 57 and 42), and the birth places for William and his parents are wrong (listed as Kansas for William, and Ohio and Kansas for his parents, when it should be New Jersey for William, and New Jersey and New York for his parents). Perhaps someone who didn't know the family well supplied the information.10,11,12
He and Anna moved to Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, in 19227, and are listed there in the 1930 census.13 In 1940, after his wife's death, he was living in Boulder with the family of his grand-nephew Clyde Haring.14

Kittie Kline was born on 16 July 1871 in Rockland Co., New York. (The date is from her cemetery marker. The 1900 census says July 1872, and her death certificate says 16 July 1873.)4,3 She married first William H. Haring on 22 February 1888 in Tappan, Rockland Co., New York.5 She married second Arthur Osborn Barnett, son of Samuel Osborn Barnett and Katherine E. Ross, on 22 April 1927 at the Church of the Holy Communion in Manhattan, New York Co., New York.1 She died on 25 April 1948 at the City Hospital on Welfare Island (now Roosevelt Island) in Manhattan at age 76.2 She was buried at Tappan Cemetery in Tappan, Rockland Co., New York.4
She and her first husband William may have separated, or met with some misfortune that caused the family to split up. In 1900 she was living as a servant for Charles Artel and his wife Hellen in Manhattan, New York Co., New York, and listed in the census as having been married for thirteen years with three children6, while William was living in Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., New York, as a boarder in a hotel, and listed as single.7 Their son Harold, age 12, was living as a boarder in the household of Jerome & Grace Bolmer in North Bergen Twp., Hudson Co., New Jersey8; Norman, age 9, was living with the family of Mossler and Sarah Greene in Overpeck Twp., Bergen Co., New Jersey, and listed as their nephew9; and Clyde, age 5, was living with his mother's uncle William Powless and his wife Anna in Alma, Park Co., Colorado.10
She and her children were back together by 1910, after her husband William's death, when they were enumerated in Manhattan, New York Co., New York, in the census.11 She is again listed in Manhattan in the 1915 state census and the 1920 federal census, as a widow12,13, and she and her second husband Arthur are listed together there in the 1930 census.14

William Henry Kline1,2

b. 2 May 1874, d. 2 May 1936
FatherPeter Kline3 b. Jun 1843, d. Jun 1925
MotherMaria Antoinette Powless3 b. 21 May 1847, d. 30 Aug 1928
Relationship3rd cousin 2 times removed of Jane Ellen Bowditch
William Henry Kline was born on 2 May 1874 in Rockland Co., New York.2,3 He married first Josephine Parsell on 8 November 1893 in Tappan, Rockland Co., New York.4 He married second Alice Quick (see below). He died on 2 May 1936 at Ideal Hospital in Endicott, Broome Co., New York, at age 62.5,6
He and his first wife Josephine are listed in Orangetown, Rockland Co., New York, in the federal and state censuses from 1900 to 1930, with their children Jessie and Harry in 1900 and 1905, Jessie, Harry, and Albert in 1910 and 1915, and Albert from 1920 to 1930.7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 From the censuses, he worked at railroad docks most of his life, as a foreman by 1905. In 1918 his employer was the New York Central Railroad in Wehawken Twp., Hudson Co., New Jersey.2
No marriage record has been found online for William Kline and Alice Quick, but William's obituary says that he was survived by his wife Alice5; the 1936, 1940, and 1941 Endicott, New York, city directories list Alice as Alice Kline, widow of Wm. H.5; she is listed as Alice I. Kline in Social Security records15; and she is listed as Mrs. Alice Kline in a news article about her daughter Vivian's marriage in 1947.16 Her surname is from Vivian's marriage record, which gives Quick as her mother's maiden name.17
The information found online for William is confusing. It appears that he was married twice, first to Josephine Parsell, then to Alice Quick, and that he had three children with Josephine from 1894 to 1907 (Jessie, Harry, and Albert), and one with Alice in 1926 (Vivian). But as noted above, he is listed in the censuses with Josephine from 1900 to 1930 in Orangetown, New York, and Alice is listed on her own in 1930 in Jersey City, New Jersey.18
Further, his name appears on two cemetery markers, one with Josephine at Tappan Cemetery in Tappan, Rockland Co., New York, and one with Alice at Riverside Cemetery in Endicott, Broome Co., New York. The first marker is inscribed "William H. 1874-1936, His Wife Josephine B. 1869-1958." William and Josephine's daughter Jessie and her husband share the marker, inscribed as "Walter Smith 1895-1975, His Wife Jessie Kline 1894-1968." The second marker is inscribed "Kline, William H. 1874-1936, Alice Kline Knapp 1891-1983."19,20
One might wonder if there were two men with the same name and birth/death years, one who married Josephine (call him William 1), and one who married Alice (William 2). However, two pieces of evidence dispute this. First, the obituary of William 2 names a sister, Mrs. Arthur Barnett of New York City. Mrs. Arthur Barnett is Kittie (Kline) (Haring) Barnett, daughter of Peter Kline and Marie Antoinette Powless.5 Second, in the 1940 census Jessie (Kline) Smith, daughter of William 1, is listed with her husband Walter, and their household includes Mattie (Kline) Haring, daughter of Peter Kline and Marie Antoinette Powless, listed as "aunt."21,22 Together these show that William 1 and William 2 are the same person, son of Peter Kline and Marie Antoinette Powless.
Another possibility is that the father of Alice Quick's daughter Vivian, born in 1926, was someone else, and that William adopted her after they were married. But a transcript of Vivian's birth record lists her surname as Kline.23 Further, a note at her entry at Find A Grave says she was raised by her aunt Katharine Helena Quick Johnston in Harford [Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania], and she is listed with the surname Kline in the 1940 census, living with Katharine H. Johnston in Harford.24,25
