In 1900 he was living as a boarder with David Krisher and his wife in North Manchester, Wabash Co., Indiana (listed in the census as John W. Wise), and working as a furniture merchant.9 After their marriage, he and his first wife Clara moved to La Porte, LaPorte Co., Indiana, and are listed there in the censuses from 1910 to 1930.10,11,12 He was working in a saw mill in 191010 and as a bookkeeper for McLellan Buck & Wise Co. when he registered for the World War I draft in 191813, owned a furniture factory in 192011, and was an insurance agent in 1930.12
He and his second wife Anna moved from La Porte to Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois, in 1941.8,2
His estate was valued at $119,000. He left a quarter section of land in Piatt Co. to his son Willard J. Wise of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After Willard's death the land was to go in equal shares to John's grandchildren John W. Wise of Kenmore, New York, and Marjorie Sullivan of Glen Ellyn. He also left $2000 to his sister Mary Neff, and $500 to his housekeeper Pearl F. Sensenbaugh. The rest, including $27,000 in personal property, was to go to his son Willard.14

He and his wife Catharine and family are listed in the census of 1850 in Ross Twp., Clinton Co., Indiana.5 In the spring of 1856 they moved to Willow Branch Twp., Piatt Co., Illinois.6 They are listed there in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses. In 1870 Henry Michael (age 22, a farm laborer) and David Near (age 21, a farmer) are listed as living in the same household. In 1880 Mahala Nash (age 13, a servant) and John Wine[?] (age 22) were living with them.7,8,9 He is listed there in 1900 with his second wife Elizabeth, living next to his son Jacob.10 He helped found the German Baptist Church in Willow Branch Twp.6 Politically, he was a Republican.6

She and her husband John moved to Carroll Co., Indiana, arriving on 11 October 1826. They settled on land in Rock Creek that her husband had purchased at a land sales event in Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co., Indiana, in 1824.1,4 She and her husband John are listed in Carroll Co. in the 1850 census, with their daughter Hannah. Also living with them was George Duke, age 26.5

He was of German descent.1 On 15 November 1785 he acquired 300 acres of land, known as Wolf's Hill, on the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River in Frankstown Twp., Bedford Co. (later Huntingdon Co., then Blair Co.), Pennsylvania.1 In 1788 he owed 12 shillings in state tax, and 6 shillings in county tax, on property in Huntingdon Co. valued at £254, including two horses, three cattle, and 300 acres of land.1 On 12 March 1791 he was appointed Constable in Frankstown Twp.1
He moved to Montgomery Co., Ohio, about 1802, settling initially in Jefferson Twp., and later moving to Madison Twp.1 He was chosen as a deacon for the Lower Miami Church in 1803.1 He gave a small piece of his land to the German Baptist Society for use as a cemetery, where he was later buried.1

His surname may have been Greib.1 He immigrated from Germany on the ship Richard and Elizabeth, and arrived in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, on 28 September 1733.1 He was a cooper.1 In 1738 he was living in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, near the area that later became Hanover Twp. in York Co.1 He was one of the founders of the Little Conewago congregation of German Baptists in the area.1
