She and her first husband Daniel moved to Macon Co., Illinois, about 1856.1 At a meeting held at their home on 26 May 1856, the Sangamon Valley congregation of the Church of the Brethren was formed, with Maria and Daniel as charter members. It was later learned that there was another congregation with that name, so the name was changed to Cerro Gordo, Macon County. In 1884 the congregation was divided geographically, with the name Cerro Gordo, Piatt County, used for the eastern part, and the name Oakley used for the western part.1,4 She may have had additional children with her second husband Martin.1
