He served during the French and Indian War, enlisting in Capt. Edmund Wells' Company on 1 April 1756 in Hebron, Windham Co. (now Tolland Co.), Connecticut.3 He and his wife Susanna moved to Hawley, Hampshire Co. (now Franklin Co.), Massachusetts (another record says Whately, Hampshire Co. (now Franklin Co.), Massachusetts), about 1770.3 They moved again, to Pompey Hill, Onondaga Co., New York, in 17953, and to Locke, Cayuga Co., New York, in 1803.3

He and his wife Abigail moved to Austerlitz, Albany Co. (now Columbia Co.), New York, in 1766.5
He served at various times during the Revolutionary War, being first commissioned on 20 October 1775 as a captain, then major, in the 4th Co., 9th Reg., of the Albany Co. militia.5,3,6 He served under Gens. Philip Schuyler and Horatio Gates during the northern campaign against British Gen. John Burgoyne's forces, including the Battles of Saratoga, and was present at Burgoyne's surrender on 17 October 1777. He also served on the court martial of a man named Husen who was found guilty of treason and executed. In 1778 he marched under Col. Peter R. Livingston up the Mohawk River to defend Johnstown, New York, against the Tories and Indians, then on to Cherry Valley, New York.3 He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on 28 May 1778, and retired his commission on 4 November 1778.5
He served as a member of the New York State Assembly from 1781 to 1785, and in 1792. He was appointed an associate justice of the Court of Common Pleas in 1795, then justice in 1796.5
