He settled first in either Westerly, Rhode Island, or Stonington, Connecticut. Sometime before 1752 he and his family moved to Squam, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, to a Seventh Day Baptist settlement near the ocean.2 He was a ship carpenter in either Westerly or Stonington.2 In Monmouth Co., New Jersey, he made salt from sea water.2 On 27 February 1752 he and Thomas Davis were chosen deacons of the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., New Jersey.2
He and his first wife Mary had two known children, Mary and Simeon.2 He and his second wife Judith had the following known children: Experience, Elizabeth, Thomas (b 12 February 1759), Amey.2
