He traveled to California in 1849, probably as part of the California gold rush, and remained there after his wife Elizabeth's death in 1850. He was later joined by his son George.2 What became of them is unknown. Neither of them is listed as an heir in the 1877 probate records of George Sr.'s mother Nancy (Perkins) Runnells, but that probably means that they couldn't be located, not that they had died.4
