He was half native American, listed as a member of the Chippewa tribe on the Fond Du Lac reservation in Minnesota at the time of his birth.5
He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II, employed by the War Shipping Administration in Washington, D.C.6 He was working as a printer at the time of his marriage in 1961.1

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, enlisting on 31 December 1941.8 At the time of his marriage to Juanda in 1943 he was stationed at the U.S. Destroyer Base in San Diego, San Diego Co., California, working as an electrician.1 He was discharged on 17 October 1945.8
He and his first wife Juanda are listed in Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington, in the 1950 census.9 He was then working as a truck driver for an interstate trucking company.9 He later worked as a motor winder for General Electric.5 He and his second wife Edna also bought and ran Cherokee Landing Resort at Newman Lake in Spokane Co., Washington.4

He and his first wife June were living in Lansing, Ingham Co., Michigan, in 1930, in the same house as Harry's parents and his half-sister Muriel and her husband Casto Devers.7 He was working as a sander for an auto company.7
He and his second wife Phyllis have not been found in the 1940 census, but when he registered for the World War II draft on 16 October 1940, he gave his address as Box 22, Brohman, Newaygo Co., Michigan, and Phyllis's as R.F.D. 2 in nearby White Cloud, Newaygo Co.2 Harry's children from his first marriage, Russell (age 7) and Robert (9), were then living in Lansing, Ingham Co., Michigan, Russell with his mother and her second husband Ferdinand Fischer, and Robert with his grandfather John Freed.8,9 Phyllis's daughter Mildred (11) from her first marriage was living with Phyllis's parents in Wilcox Twp., Newaygo Co.10
He served for a few months in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting as a private on 26 May 1943 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.11 He was discharged on 23 August 1943.12
Harry and Phyllis, and Harry's son Russell, are listed together in White Cloud in the 1950 census.13
He and Phyllis apparently raised, and may have formally adopted, Phyllis's grandson Clayton, son of her daughter Mildred. Clayton's obituary uses the surname Evans, and names his mother Mildred L. Patrick and "his adopted parents, Harry and Phyllis Evans." He's listed with Harry and Phyllis in the 1950 census as their son, with the surname Evans, and Phyllis's obituary names him as her son.14,13,5
