He had a 21-year career in the U.S. Navy, from 1943 to 1964, serving in both World War II and the Korean War.5 In 1966, shortly after retiring from the Navy, he moved to Springfield, Lane Co., Oregon, where he worked at Weyerhaeuser Co. for 17 years, retiring in 1985.5

He and his wife Laura are listed in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, in the 1900 census.5 Although Fred's obituary says he lived in the area of Glenn, Allegan Co., Michigan, most of his life, he and Laura are listed in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan, in the censuses from 1910 to 1930.6,7,8,9 They have not been found in the 1940 census, but at some point they did move to a farm near Glenn.6 About 1951 he moved into the Shimer Convalescent Home in Watervliet, Berrien Co., Michigan, while Laura remained at the farm near Glenn.6,3
