Laura Sophia Kidder was born on 13 September 1842 in Georgetown, Pennsylvania.2,3 She married Nathan Decatur Burlingham, son of Squire R. Burlingham and Lydia Abbott, on 7 December 1862 or 1863 in New York.4,5 She died on 13 March 1923 in Norwalk, Los Angeles Co., California, at age 80 from "paralysis."2 She was buried at Grand View Memorial Park & Crematory (Sect. F) in Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California.6,2
She and her husband Nathan moved to California after his return from the Civil War.1 They are listed in Mud Springs Twp., El Dorado Co., in the 1870 census, with eight other men from various countries, all apparently mine workers.7 They are listed in Kelsey Twp., El Dorado Co., in the 1880 census8, but soon afterward apparently lived for a short time in Strawberry Point, Clayton Co., Iowa, about 30 miles from Nathan's brother Robert in neighboring Fayette Co.9,10,11 They were probably back in El Dorado Co. by 1883, where their daughter Augusta's daughter Ruth Kidder was born on 18 July.12,13
In 1897 they bought a 34-acre ranch in West Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California,1 and they are listed in Burbank Twp., Los Angeles Co., in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. Their granddaughter Ruth Kidder is listed with them, as Ruth Kidder in 1900 and Ruth Burlingham in 1910.14,15
In 1917, six years after her husband's death, she suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed.16 She was living with her daughter Lydia's family in Norwalk Twp., Los Angeles Co., California, in 1920.17

Children of Laura Sophia Kidder and Nathan Decatur Burlingham

Laura and Nathan may have had an additional daughter, a twin of their daughter Lydia, who died young or was stillborn. A list of recent births in the 21 October 1872 issue of the Sacramento Daily Union says "In El Dorado, El Dorado county, the wife of N. D. Burlingham, of twin daughters." However, Laura's listings in the 1900 and 1910 censuses both say she had only four children, with all four then living.20,14,15

Cynthia Woods1

b. 1 November 1790, d. after October 1861
FatherBenjamin Woods1 b. 20 Sep 1747, d. Mar 1828
MotherSarah Adams1 b. a 1749, d. bt 1816 - 1827
Cynthia Woods was born on 1 November 1790 in Greenwich, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts (later Dana, Worcester Co., Massachusetts).1 She was baptized there on 9 June 1791.1 She married first Samuel Montgomery on 19 June 1824 at the First Presbyterian Church in Albany, Albany Co., New York.2 She was married second, by Rev. Chapin, to Philip Burlingham, son of Philip Burlingame and Elizabeth Donaway, on 5 December 1839 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., New York.3 She died after October 1861 in Auburn Twp., Fayette Co., Iowa.4,5
The identification of the "Mrs. Cynthia Montgomery" who married Philip Burlingham in Jamestown, New York, as Cynthia Woods is based on indirect evidence. First, there's a marriage record for Cynthia Woods and Samuel Montgomery in 1824 in Albany, Albany Co., New York, and there's a Cynthia Woods listed in Albany in the 1820 census. In the 1830 census, Cynthia Montgomery is listed by herself in Pomfret, Chautauqua Co., New York. The age for Cynthia in these two censuses is consistent with the age of Cynthia Burlingham in later censuses. Second, her purchase of land in Jamestown, New York, in 1852, and its sale in 1861 (described below), show that the Cynthia Burlingham in Chautauqua Co., New York, in 1852 is the same person as the Cynthia Burlingham in Fayette Co., Iowa, in 1861. Finally, Woods Notes by Winifred Lovering Holman, citing church records and Woods family bible records, has Cynthia Woods, daughter of Benjamin Woods and Sarah Adams, born 1 November 1790 in Greenwich, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, and died in Auburn, Iowa.2,6,7,8,9,1
She and her second husband Philip were among the early members of the First Baptist Church in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., New York, officially established on 24 May 1832. Philip joined by baptism in 1841, and Cynthia joined the following year.10
They are listed in Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., New York, in the 1850 federal census and the 1855 state census. Living with them in 1850 was Adelia Hale, age 25, the future wife of Philip's grandson Robert.
About 1856 Cynthia and Philip moved to Auburn Twp., Fayette Co., Iowa, where they lived with Robert and Adelia and their family, with Philip perhaps moving first and Cynthia following shortly afterwards. Philip is listed with them there in the 1856 Iowa state census11, and she and Philip are both listed with them in the 1860 federal census.12
On 28 April 1852 she bought two lots and part of a third in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., New York, from Henry Baker and wife Maria for $88.8 Nine years later, on 11 April 1861, and then described as being "of Fayette Co., Iowa", she sold the same tract to Sarah Burnell for $500.9
