After their marriage, she and her husband Edwin lived for a time in Ft. Madison, Lee Co., Iowa.9,10 They moved to Oelwein, Fayette Co., Iowa, about February 190011. and are listed there in the 1900 census with their son Robert. He and his first wife Mae are listed in North Jackson, Amador Co., California, in the 1900 census8, where he was working as a miner.8 He was in Arizona in 1907, still working as a miner2, but by 1910 he and Mae were in Idaho Falls, Bingham Co., Idaho,9 where he was an engineer for the railroad.9 Mae's divorced brother Charlie was living with them in 1910.9 Bert later turned to ranching and farming in southern California10,11,12, except for a period from at least 1918 to 1920 when he worked as a box maker for California Central Creamery in El Centro, Imperial Co., California.13,14
He and Mae are listed as husband and wife in the 1915-16 Glendale city directory, but in the 1917 directory Mae is listed with her daughter Daphne in Glendale and Bert is not.15 By 1918 he was living in El Centro while Mae was still in Glendale.13 He is listed in El Centro in the 1920 census, enumerated in January, as married but without Mae, and living as a boarder with the widow Josephine Parizek (who he would marry as his second wife about two years later) and her two children.14 Mae is listed in January 1920 as married but without Bert, living with her widowed mother in Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California.16
He and his second wife Josephine are listed together in Elsinore Twp., Riverside Co., California, in the 1930 census, along with Josephine's children Edwin and Olga Parizek from her first marriage.11 He is listed there again in the 1940 census, but she was then living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, as a maid for Myron Etienne and his wife.12,17

She and her husband Daniel lived for a time in Jalisco, Mexico, possibly from December 1898 until at least 19078,2, where he had a mining business.8 In 1910 Bernice and their children Bert and Percy were living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California. Her marriage record and her death certificate both name her father as Bert Kidder, but given that her mother Augusta married DeForest Kidder about a year and a half before her birth, it's probable that DeForest was her father. Perhaps he also used the name Bert.3,1
She lived in Kelsey Twp., El Dorado Co., California, as a child, presumably with her mother4, and apparently went with her grandparents Nathan and Laura Burlingham when they moved to West Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California, in 1897.5 She is listed with them in Burbank Twp., Los Angeles Co., California, in the 1900 census as Ruth B. Kidder6, and in the 1910 census as Ruth Burlingham.7
After their marriage she and her husband Rudolph lived in Garden Valley, El Dorado Co., California.4,8

After their marriage he and his first wife Ruth lived in Garden Valley, El Dorado Co., California.10,3 He continued to live in Garden Valley after Ruth's death until 1962, when he moved to Auburn, Placer Co., California.3 He is listed in Georgetown Twp., El Dorado Co., in the censuses from 1920 to 1940, by himself in 192011, and with his cousin Lillie Mary Nathlich (who he would later marry) in 1930 and 1940.12,13
He was apparently quite a colorful character. He worked as a gold miner, but never struck it rich, and during hard times bought and sold cattle, farmed, and made and sold bootleg whiskey during Prohibition.4 In 1958 he traveled to New York City for an appearance on the 5 October episode of the popular TV show "What's My Line."14 He was also an accomplished self-taught violinist, and made 29 hand-carved violins during his lifetime. He and his second wife Lillie, also a musician, performed together at many dances and community gatherings.4,15

She is listed with the given name Lillian (or Lillie) in her parents' household in the 1900 and 1920 censuses, but as Della (or Dell) in all other online sources that have been examined, sometimes with the middle initial L.3,4,1,2
After their marriage she and her first husband John lived in Garden Valley, El Dorado Co., California, for a time, then in Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California, before moving to Reno, Washoe Co., Nevada, about October 1909.13 During this period she worked as a waitress, and in Reno as a servant, while he remained "generally ... idle" with occasional odd jobs and a few days working at a gambling house.13
In November 1908 John was arrested and charged with grand larceny for stealing a watch and jewelry valued at $75 from Ernest Mulliken's boarding room at the Dunnigan Hotel in Dunnigan, Yolo Co., California. He had traveled to Dunnigan from his home in Sacramento on 2 November to visit Della, who was working at the hotel as a waitress, and returned home two days later. A few days later Mulliken found that his trunk had been broken into, and that the watch and jewelry were missing. John became the prime suspect, since he was the only stranger staying on the same floor at the hotel, and he had asked the wife of C. W. Robinson, the hotel manager, to borrow a hammer.
Mulliken and the police kept a watch on Della, hoping she would lead them to him. Before long Della showed Robinson a message saying her mother was ill in Sacramento, and asked for time off to see her. Mulliken followed her to Sacramento, where she took another train to Stockton and went to a boarding house. Mulliken kept watch for 2-3 days without seeing John, then returned to Dunnigan.
Robinson, the hotel manager, was then formally deputized, went to the boarding house in Stockton, and knocked on the door where Della was staying. John answered and was arrested. He was brought back to Dunnigan where he was arraigned and pleaded not guilty. Unable to pay his $1000 bond, he was sent to jail.7,14,15
In May 1910 Della filed a complaint with the police that John had beaten her. He was arrested and jailed, but she later recanted, and testified unwillingly. The case was dismissed on 1 June after the judge made him promise to treat her better in the future.16,17
On 20 August 1910 John was arrested in Auburn, Placer Co., California, for stealing three diamond rings valued at $700 from the wife of George A. Campbell, manager of the Reno Power, Water, and Light Co. Della, who had been working for the Campbells as a servant for three months, was also arrested, perhaps a few days later, and "held technically for investigation."
Mrs. Campbell reportedly had left the rings on her dresser the afternoon of 14 August, and several hours later discovered that they were missing. Suspicion fell on John, who had visited Della there that afternoon and disappeared the next morning. Police learned that Della had recently been writing to a J. H. Hart in Grass Valley and in Colfax. When John went to the post office in Colfax asking for any mail sent to J. H. Hart, he was arrested. One of the diamonds, worth $350, was found in his possession, and had recently been remounted in a cheap setting. Della was questioned by the police but denied knowing John's whereabouts, said she was surprised by his arrest, and was convinced that he was innocent.13,18,19
About a month later however, on 20 September 1910, both John and Della pleaded guilty, much to the surprise of court officials and onlookers.20 John took the blame for the robbery, and on 22 September 1910 was sentenced to five years at the state prison in Carson City, Nevada, while Della was released, reportedly "in a delicate condition."21
No record has been found online for the marriage or divorce of Della Moore and Joseph Patton, but they had a son together on 1 February 1913 in Cowlitz Co., Washington. Further, on 9 April 1913 Joseph Patton of Tacoma, Washington, was arrested in Portland, Oregon, by request of the Tacoma police, and charged with deserting his wife Mrs. Della Patton and their 2-month-old child.22,23 The child was named Lester Irving Patton in his birth record, but listed as Leslie Patton in the 1920 census, and as Leslie Carlson in the 1930 census.4,24
Similarly, no online record has been found for Della's marriage to Oscar Carlson, but both of her parents' obituaries name her as Mrs. Della Carlson, and they are listed as husband and wife in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. When Oscar registered for the World War I draft in November 1917 he stated he was single with no dependents, so they must have married between then and 19 January 1920 when they were enumerated together in the census.5,6,4,24,25
In 1920 she and Oscar were living with her parents in Georgetown Twp., El Dorado Co., California,4 and probably moved with them to Fair Oaks, Sacramento Co., California, about 1925 (her mother's 1929 obituary says "a few years ago").6 She and Oscar are listed there in the 1930 census, in the same house as Della's father John and her brother Alymer and his wife Drucilla, but as a separate household.24 In 1935 they were living in Roseville, Placer Co., California,26 and by 1940 were back in El Dorado Co., in Greenwood Twp.26 Della moved to Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California, in 1959.11

After she finished grammar school in 1910, her family could not afford the cost of books, etc., that she would need for high school. So she moved from home into the town of Placerville where she boarded with various families, not uncommon at the time, worked to pay for her own schooling, and graduated in 1913 from El Dorado High School.7 After graduation she went to work for Candy Kitchen, and in the summers of 1913 and 1914 worked in the post office at the Glen Alpine resort in the Sierras, near Lake Tahoe.8,9
In 1921 she and her husband Roy bought a 250-acre ranch in Mud Springs Twp., El Dorado Co., California, where they lived together the rest of their married lives.8,10,11,12 After her husband's death in 1963 she sold some of their ranch land, but kept a portion and built a new home there in the Missouri Flat area. She remained there until 1996, when she moved into the Gold Country Health Center in Placerville.13
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the California State Soil Conservation Commission, and traveled with them several times, including trips to Jamaica, Hawaii, and Alaska.13

He completed grammar school in Garden Valley, El Dorado Co., California, at age 16, and the next year went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California, as an apprentice machinist.6
When the U.S. entered World War I in April 1917, he enlisted on 29 April at age 18, one of the first (perhaps the first) from El Dorado Co. to do so. He was assigned as a private to the 22nd Aero Squadron, Wing No. 1, of the U.S. Army Air Service. The squadron trained for a year in Texas, at Camp Sam Houston, Camp Kelly, and Camp Hicks. They also spent three months in Toronto, Canada, where he was trained in wireless telegraphy at Givens Street School. When their training ended, his squadron was sent to France, where they saw active service along the front lines. He was discharged on 31 June 1919.7,6,8,9
After the war he returned to his position in Sacramento as an apprentice machinist, and is listed there in the 1920 census living as a lodger with the family of William Hallaman.10 By 1930 he was a machinist (no longer an apprentice), still in Sacramento, living with his wife Ruth. His sister Jessie, then divorced, was living with them.11 By 1935 they had moved to Roseville, Placer Co., California; John's divorced brother Alymer was living with them there in 1940.12
