He and his first wife Mae are listed in North Jackson, Amador Co., California, in the 1900 census8, where he was working as a miner.8 He was in Arizona in 1907, still working as a miner2, but by 1910 he and Mae were in Idaho Falls, Bingham Co., Idaho,9 where he was an engineer for the railroad.9 Mae's divorced brother Charlie was living with them in 1910.9 Bert later turned to ranching and farming in southern California10,11,12, except for a period from at least 1918 to 1920 when he worked as a box maker for California Central Creamery in El Centro, Imperial Co., California.13,14
He and Mae are listed as husband and wife in the 1915-16 Glendale city directory, but in the 1917 directory Mae is listed with her daughter Daphne in Glendale and Bert is not.15 By 1918 he was living in El Centro while Mae was still in Glendale.13 He is listed in El Centro in the 1920 census, enumerated in January, as married but without Mae, and living as a boarder with the widow Josephine Parizek (who he would marry as his second wife about two years later) and her two children.14 Mae is listed in January 1920 as married but without Bert, living with her widowed mother in Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California.16
He and his second wife Josephine are listed together in Elsinore Twp., Riverside Co., California, in the 1930 census, along with Josephine's children Edwin and Olga Parizek from her first marriage.11 He is listed there again in the 1940 census, but she was then living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, as a maid for Myron Etienne and his wife.12,17
