He was an aviation executive with Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, Los Angeles Co., California, at the time of his marriage.1,2
In November 1953 Melba reported to police in Portland, Oregon, that her 10-year-old son was missing. She found out from playmates that he got into a car with California plates, and was certain that his father, her ex-husband William Franson of Van Nuys, California, had taken him. She had court-ordered full custody, but admitted having "custody trouble."6

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting on 21 October 1942, and was discharged on 25 January 1946.6
He lived in California for a few years after the war. He is listed in the 1950 census in Los Angeles, enumerated on 17 April. Living with him as a housekeeper was Melba Franson, who he would marry later that year, and her son Arthur.7 He later moved back to the Chicago area, presumably after his divorce from Melba, where he married twice more.5
During his lifetime he worked as an insurance underwriter, furniture salesman, deliveryman, taxi driver, and real estate broker. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalists' Near North Fellowship and the World Federalists, loved singing and dancing, and had an extensive knowledge about the history of Chicago.5
