From 1877 to 1888 he taught school in Allegan Co., Michigan, in the winter, and worked as a carpenter in the summer, learning fine cabinetry work from his father.1,2
About 1888 he and his wife Lulu moved to Ord, Valley Co., Nebraska, where according to family tradition they lived for a time in a sod house.1,2,7 They are listed in Ord in the censuses from 1900 to 1940, on their own from 1900 to 1930, and with their daughter Dorothy's family in 1940.8,9,10,11,12
After moving to Nebraska he served as deputy clerk in Valley Co. for about a year2, then in 1889 began studying law with his brother Elliot.2,1 He was admitted to the bar in 1890, and he and Elliott practiced law together until 1903. After a year working alone, he and another brother, Arthur, formed the law firm Clements Brothers. In 1911 he again went into independent practice.2
In 1920 he was elected district judge in Nebraska's 11th District. He took the oath of office on 18 June 1920, and sold his law practice to attorney E. L. Vogletanz the following day. He continued to serve in that office until his retirement in 1940.2,1,13 His obituary describes him as "one of Nebraska's most outstanding district judges, having far the fewest cases reversed of any judge. ... His cases were not allowed to drag along on technicalities, for [he] would see the point and chop through fancy arguments straight to it, reaching decisions quickly, but justly."1
Soon after his retirement, he and Lulu moved to Ontario, San Bernardino Co., California,1,14 where in 1935 he and his sons Alan and Edwin had purchased a lumber yard that was being managed by Alan.15
His hobbies and interests included football, baseball, golf, bridge, reading, gardening, and fishing.2,1

He moved to Jonesboro, Craighead Co., Arkansas, to work in a basket factory owned by his uncle Fay V. Johnson, and initially boarded with the Adams family, where he met his future wife Margaret.8
He and Margaret were living in Jonesboro in 191011, and he was working as a bookkeeper for his uncle's company.11 They moved to Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, in 1914, when they thought Margaret had contracted tuberculosis, hoping the move might improve her health. It turned out to be malaria, however, and she fully recovered.8 They are listed in Boulder in the censuses from 1920 to 1940. In 1920 Margaret's brother Birl Adams was living with them.12,13,14

While young he lived and worked off and on in Mexico for a few years. In September 1908 he was working there as a bookkeeper for the Maine and Nebraska Mining Co.19, and on 12 September 1909 the Ord Quiz reported that he had gone to El Oro, Mexico, for a job with "a large mining concern."20 In February 1911 he was in Guanajato, Mexico, where he had purchased the only American hotel in the city, was playing baseball, and had reportedly become engaged to "a beautiful senorita."21 By May 1911, however, he had fled Guanajato due to the Mexican Revolution. He sold his hotel, and left the city the day before rebels blew up the local railroad station. He played baseball for a time in the Texas League, then returned home to Ord, Valley Co., Nebraska.22,23
Very soon after returning to Ord in 1911 he decided to begin studying law in his father's law office.24 His studies were apparently interrupted by military service, however. The Ord Quiz reported in November 1916 that his wife (Edna) had left for Laino Grande, Texas, where he was serving as a captain in Co. I, stationed on the Mexican border.25 Shortly after his death, a columnist described him as "one of the most outstanding commanding officers in the 5th Nebraska." It noted that he was a brilliant student in the class of 1904, but often didn't study and almost failed. It also described a fist fight over an old feud with a former subordinate from Co. I, after which they were "pretty good friends."26
In 1920, after his military service, he and his first wife Edna were listed in the census in Ord10, and his occupation was given as law student.10 He apparently gave up the idea of becoming a lawyer, however, and went into the lumber business. In 1925 he was managing the Hammond Lumber Co. facility in Van Nuys, Los Angeles Co., California, and left that position in September of that year for a similar position in Imperial Valley27, where he was manager of a lumber yard in 1932.28 In 1942 he was managing a lumber business in Fort Bragg, Mendocino Co., California.4
In August 1932 he was nearby when Tommy Lion, age 6, drowned after falling from his father's boat off Newport Beach, Orange Co., California. The father, Lewis Lion, tried to save him, nearly losing his own life, and was rescued by Alan from another boat.29
In 1930 he was living in an apartment in Los Angeles9, and in 1940 he and his second wife Ann were living in Ontario, San Bernardino Co., California. Their house at 421 W. Sixth St. was designated a local historic landmark on 19 February 2002.15,30

She and her husband Wayne were living in Jonesboro, Craighead Co., Arkansas, in 1910.4 They moved to Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, in 1914, when they thought Margaret had contracted tuberculosis, hoping the move might improve her health. It turned out to be malaria, however, and she fully recovered.2 They are listed in Boulder in the censuses from 1920 to 1940. In 1920 Margaret's brother Birl Adams was living with them.7,8,9

After their marriage, she and her husband Julian lived in South Haven, Van Buren Co., Michigan.4,5 They later moved to Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan, probably between 1910, when they were listed in South Haven in the census, and 1912, when their daughter Florence was married and listed her residence as Pontiac.5,6 They are listed there in the censuses from 1920 to 1940. Their sons Leo and Archie were living with them in 1920 and 1930 (Leo was apparently separated from his first wife in 1920, and from his second wife in 1930, and Archie was single). In 1940 Leo was again (still?) with them, as was their widowed daughter Florence Weber.7,8,9

In September 1925 Leo filed a complaint in court in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan, claiming that his ex-wife Pauline was violating the terms of their divorce agreement by moving with their daughter Margaret to Miami, Florida, thus preventing him from seeing her. Pauline responded with a petition asking the court to approve their move, stating that Margaret was in the custody of Pauline's mother, with whom they were living. The outcome of the case is unknown.10,11
He is listed with his parents in Pontiac in the censuses from 1920 to 1940, and with his father in 1950 after his mother's death. He's listed as married in 1920 and 1930, but without his wife Pauline in 1920, or Mildred in 1930. He's listed as single in 1940, and divorced in 1950.12,13,14,15 He was a druggist there (for Keyser Drug Co. in 1917), and owned his own store by 1930.1,12,13 By 1940 he had changed occupations, and was working as an automotive motor inspector.14,3,15
