He went by the nickname "Bud."3
He graduated in 1933 from Memorial High School in Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., Indiana, where he earned eleven letters in football, basketball, tennis, and baseball.3 (Another article says it was fourteen letters in five sports.)4 In his senior year the basketball team played in the 32-team National Catholic Tournament at Loyola University in Chicago, finishing fourth, and he was one of eight players named to the All-National Catholic Team.5
He continued his athletic career at the Evansville College as a football player, playing center his first two years, then fullback. In 1935 he led all college scorers in Indiana, earned all-state honors in 1935 and 1936, and is now a member of the school's Football Hall of Fame.5
He also excelled at tennis, winning the Evansville city singles title in 1935 and 1936, and doubles titles five times.5 He later wrote an athletic history of his high school.3 On 3 August 1980 he was inducted into the Sunday Courier and Press Tri-State Hall of Fame.4 He was also an avid quail hunter, and loved working with his bird dogs.3
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, enlisting at Bolling Field Anacostia in Washington, D.C., on 8 August 1941.6 He rose to the rank of master sergeant, and was selected to attend officer's candidate school. After graduating he was stationed in Orlando, Florida, working in finance. He next enrolled in intelligence school, was later sent to Tinian Island in the Pacific, and was there when the Enola Gay landed after dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.7
After his discharge from the Air Force in 1946 he and Herb Simpson founded Publicity Associates, with Evansville College as one of their first clients.7 That led to an appointment as sports information director at the school, where he remained for five years. He later became publicity manager for Audubon Raceway, from 1964 to 1968, and again from 1972 to 1978, and for the Evansville Triplets baseball team from 1970 to 1971. He retired from active employment after suffering a heart attack in 1978.5
He ran into some financial problems in the late 1950s, and on 20 December 1963 was arrested for failing to file federal income tax returns from 1958 to 1961.8 He was freed on bond, and on 7 February 1964 pleaded guilty to two counts (for tax years 1959 and 1961). Charges for tax years 1958 and 1960 were dropped.9 On 20 February 1964, after paying back taxes and interest of about $8900, he was fined $500 and received a six-month suspended sentence. He also owed $4000 in a civil penalty.10

She is listed twice in the 1880 census, once in Union, Branch Co., Michigan, as a boarder living with Edward and Cordelia Scott (enumerated on 1 June 1880), and again in Union Twp., Adams Co., Iowa, living with her half-brother John Stahlnecker and his family (enumerated on 15 July 1880).8,9
In 1900 she was working as a servant in the household of John Mock and his family in Egan, Moody Co., South Dakota. Her four children were also living there, listed in the census as boarders. At the same time, her husband Gilbert was being held as a prisoner in nearby Flandreau, by the county sheriff Charles McFarland. Both are listed as married.5,10
She and her second husband Leroy lived in La Grande, Union Co., Oregon. In the 1910 census her children Samuel and Imogene from her first marriage to Gilbert Gulliksen are listed with them, but as Leroy's son and daughter, and with the surname Orton. Also listed with them as Leroy's children are Agnes and Milton Orton, ages 27 and 29, presumably from his previous marriage.2 Imogene was still with them in 1920, again with the surname Orton and as Leroy's daughter.11 In 1930, after her husband Leroy's death, she and Imogene were living together in West Linn, Clackamas Co., Oregon.12
She and her first husband Gilbert had four children, all born in South Dakota: Bertha (b December 1889), Philip (b February 1894), Samuel E. (b April 1896), Imogene M. (b April 1899).5,2
